218、in order for any work of art- whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song- to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.

As one kind of treasure of human beings, art is favored by many people. But is it necessary for it to be understandable to most people in order to establish its value? This assertion may be highly suspected.

Firstly, since people have their own taste,-some people may enjoy pop music but others may prefer classical one or do not like music all all-it is very difficult for one kind of art to cater all persons. From another perspective, if one art style is enough to please every body, it seems no need to develop various sorts of works, since one main purpose of art-bring people pleasure-has achieved. Actually the variety of art relies on the facts that art can’t be understandable to most people, and certain kind of art connects with certain group of people. Thus we have to bear the embarrassment when someone goes to sleep during a brilliant piano concert. It is highly possible that he is a famous painter or sculptor although he has no sensitivity to music.

Secondly, people’s favor is usually affected by the factors that are not relative to the art itself. Some kinds of art styles are rebuilt and beautified by companies in order to attract people and make money. For example, the pop music singers are always pretty or handsome, so they are welcome by fans although their songs sometimes do not sound impressive. On the other hand, the traditional art styles, such as symphony or ballet, are not as popular as pop music, however they have more merit than it.

Thirdly, the favors of people are not constant, so it is not a reliable standard to determine the merit of the art works. For example, when the film is invented, it was silent and black and white color. Few people would rather pay money for it. But today, going to the cinema and watching films have been the habits of our everyday lives. Another example is the paintings of Picasso. When this great artist is alive, his work was criticized and regarded as worthless rubbish. However people have recognized their merit now, and these paintings were collected by many famous museums.

Given the reasons above, we can safely come to the conclusion: whether a work of art is understandable to most people or not is not necessary a reasonable standard to measure its merit. The more important thing for us is to learn to perceive the value of the art.[/SIZE]

你的头尾考试时能这样不错了。

For example, the pop music singers are always(either) pretty or handsome, so they are welcome(welcomed) by fans although their songs sometimes do not sound impressive. On the other hand, the traditional art styles, such as symphony or ballet, are not as popular as pop music, however they have more merit than it.
这段你的意思是说由于影响人们对艺术喜好当中的非艺术性因素,所以。。。这个“所以”的内容你没有表达出来,思维有点跳跃。但是我觉得你论证犯了个自相矛盾的错误。你不能因为有些古典音乐爱好者不喜欢流行音乐就说它没有价值“however they have more merit than it”。相反,我说那些歌手的包装什么也是门艺术啊。呵呵(万一阅卷的是小甜甜迷你就惨了:))

This is a nice essay. Although it is a little short, the thought clue is clear and the expression is fluent with little phraseological mistake.
What you need to do is making your argumentation points fuller and stronger.
Anyway, go ahead and make progress!
