As a student, I would like to have lessonswith the teachers who have insightful, attractive and advanced ideas, and whohave first-hand materials and pragmatic experiences to keep the class vivid,making a learning process a fun rather than a suffering. And I believe most ofthe students will have the same anticipation with me. Thus someone made thesuggestion that “In order to improve the quality of instruction at the collegeand university level. All faculty should work outside the academic worldrelated to their teaching”. While the suggestion in accordance with myexpectation, it also contains some irrational respects.
Firstly, I agree that faculty work outsidethe academic world can better impart the knowledge to the students. By workingoutside the academic world, the teacher can keep pace with the changing demandsof the society, knowing what respect of his researching field can meet the needof the society, then he will have a deep thinking of what is our society’surgent needs, to make his teaching more guidance. And the students benefit alot from the up-to-date insights and technologies are more applied to thesociety. On the contrary, without relevant working experiences, teachers’knowledge only confined to a text book which he/she nay have taught severaltimes, then the teaching without initiative, without enthusiasm, how to make astudent desire for the class? Or craving at the knowledge? To be further, toreceive a high quality of instruction?
Then I may wonder, what is the quality ofinstruction? At the college and university level, instruction is not only letthe students endow with knowledge or teach them the way to learn knowledge,more importantly, it refers to the cultivation on mind and personality and theway by which the students make themselves more adaptable to the society. Inthis respect , the faculty who have worked outside the academic world can havemore experiences in contacting the society, knowing how to live well in thesociety, can influence the students to build a positive, confidence, optimisticview of life. This is a more significant role the faculty should play.
Thirdly, I don’t agree with the assertionthat “all the faculty should work outside the academic world. For manysubjects, practical knowledge is of minimal importance than the theoreticalknowledge. Like literature, a knowledgeable teacher is much more important thana teacher with working experience. And some pure science subject likemathematics, theoretical physics only provide fundamental theoretic to someengineering subject. It’s unnecessary for these faulty to work outside theacademic world. What’s more, it’s depend on different teachers. We should admitthe limitation of one’s energy. It’s beneficial to the student on theprerequisite the teacher have enough spirit to find a perfect balance betweenthe working experience outside and the routine teaching mission.
In summary, I approve the faculty atcollege and university level should work outside the academic world to improvethe quality of instruction from different respects. But as to differentteachers, and different subjects, has different circumstances, this need toconsider respectively.
