题目:ISSUE184 - "It is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data."
日期:2010/1/4 21:19:54
The author contends that it is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data. I agree that data is essential for one to theorize. However, it depends on which realm the data is.
On one hand, it is crucial for one to have data before theorize in some special realm. For instance, in science fields, basing experimental data methods has been introduced into exploration about 300 years. In the 17th century , inductive reasoning was introduced into the academic world as a new way of thinking, which led to great scientific advances in the following hundreds of years.  One famous example of good science achievement resulting from inductive reasoning way is the surprising find--quantum theory. Planck sum up tremendous massive of data about atom core's motive in the earlier 20th century. According to this, he tried his best to construct an inductive experimental formulation, which is proved by Boer in mathematics methods, and then won the Nobel Prize. Consequently, in most cases, a theory of dada probably is easily being found out compare to get a hypothesis directly. Furthermore, experimental data can play an important role as a evidence in recording or persuading. In a society has technology standard as high as ours, direct theory simply does not have the value that much more than the Newton or Galileo's time.
On the other hand, making bold assumptions about the unknown world is not only necessary but also worthwhile. For example, the Relative Theory, assumed by Albert Einstein, is a direct theory without supports of experiment. If we want to really prove Einstein’s theory, we must have a spacecraft with velocity as fast as the light. But his detective theory seems absolutely invulnerable today because of his thought experiment. History is replete with thoughts experiments, Galileo argued Aristotle’s theory in the way of making a thoughts experiment. He imaged two balls tied together , if the weightier one drop faster, the lighter one would lessen this trend, and this tied balls can drop slower, while he proved it will drop faster on this hand that the entire tied balls is weightier than both of them. Since, if a thought experiment can proved itself in logic, it is not necessary to make this into real experiment. Deductive reasoning methods has influenced so many scientists ,even the most brilliant ones had to admit we can get some  legitimacy theories without any data , because even the most captious critics could find no flaws through logic prove.
In summarize, it is essential to theorize on data. Good scientists always find some necessary theories by deductive facts . However, theorizing on data is just one way, we also need some assumptions as well. We should combine these two ways of theorizing together to get more successful theories.
