Issue 131 “The arts (painting, music, literature, etc) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

Hidden ideas and impulses of a society can be revealed by arts, as the speaker asserts. Well, I certainly agree with what the speaker says. Art represents crystallization of human wisdom. Art can be regarded as the forerunner in darkness, it means new ideas, impulses, or even the revolution. This revolution can lead our development direction and sometimes means a great chang in our society.

Let our vision go back to the feudal old China. Nation’s decay, other country’s aggression and the government’s weakness lead most Chinese people’s mind filled with stupidity and numb. They don’t resist their destiny, they suffering much with no feeling. How did these situation changed? What could shock the cowardly people? Art, or rather, literature. While a famous person named Lu Xun studied medicine in Japan in his youth, he finally found that the only way to save China is not heal people’s body, but their minds.
“My dream seems perfect at that time. When graduated from Japan, I can do as my father does to heal people who were misdiagnosed in China. But after seeing nation’s stupidity and numb. Medicine is not an emergency. No matter how stronger a stupidity person is, he only can be a watcher and a clown. First, we must change their minds, through what? Literature.”
In 1918, Lu Xun’s first novel “Mad man’s diary” was published in the magazine “New youth” created by a group of people. Thousands of year’s feudalism is a history of “eating people”, and this novel contains Lu Xun’s strongest feeling of Chinese nation’s destiny and the current situation in society. Few people in China could wake up like Lu Xun. These people’s minds seemed crazy and mad from most people at that time. Admittedly, it is the hidden ideas and impulse with the darkness background in society. The art, or literature represented by these people’s minds finally lead a revolution.

Another good example is the New Age music.
New Age music is a new kind of music springs from light music and classic music. The initial purpose of creating this kind of music is to bring inner peace in our heart. It is quiet and easeful. Astounded and bewildered by the New Age music which uses traditional acoustic instrument as well as the modern electronic percussion, people always positioned themselves in nature atmospheres or the imagery of infinite universe. This grace music represents modern man’s desire to be quite and peace while their daily lives populated with bored chore. It obviously can be regarded as the hidden ideas and impulse of modern man in order to cast off the complicated social affairs and to live peacefully. Even more, the New Age music have changed some parts of classic and light music’s performance format.

In addition, not only the art, many other things yet can reveal the different hidden ideas and impulse in human’s mind. The development of science shows our desire to be more powerful, the sports shows our desire to be stronger, the education shows our desire to be more brilliant. While, the hope to change current society exists, hidden ideas and impulse will not disappear.

To sum up, arts sometimes means the budding hope for change. The source of change is the hidden ideas and impulse in people’s mind in current society. Furthermore, not only arts, as long as the desire for change exists, it can be represented by any forms.

131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."

I agree on the assertion insofar as that many an art reveal the individual's ideas and impulses but not of the society. In fact, art is always an important means to express human consciousness, such as emotion, ideas and so forth. Some of them represent common thought of a society, but there are also some that only imply individual thinking.

In the study of society and history, the arts from differing time and societies have always been regarded as one of the most important tools to understand special social ideas and impulses. It is because artists often convey their emotion, ideas and impulses through their works. And many of their thinking often represent common hidden thoughts of their societies. For example, in 1930's China, most of literatures were written to criticize the outdate traditions and feudalism, such as the first Chinese vernacular novel "the madman's diary" written by Chinese famous writer Lu Xun, implied Chinese's wish to rebel to outdate social institutions of that time. And we can find many antiwar artistic works after the Second World War, such as the film "Schindler's List", the literature "War and Remembrance" and so on, which reflect people's widespread disgust to wars and love for peace. In many cases, the arts provide a mirror of social consciousness, from which we can learn the hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

Yet, there are also many artistic works merely reflect individual thinking, but not of the society. To many artists, they produce works sometimes for expressing very personal ideas and views to specifics, sometimes only for conveying emotion to their audience. Many of them cannot represent the mainstream ideas and impulses of a society. For example, you can find many poems and prose that only describe the literati’s sadness, happiness and the like to their own lives, from which we can not obtain other social members' common ideas. Moreover most of art's primary goal is adding beauty to our surroundings and distracting us from the stresses of social lives. That is also why most of people are unable to find more but beauty from Beethoven's "moonlight sonata" and Van Gogh's "Sunflower". Therefore, we cannot hope to obtain the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society by the arts all the time.

In sum, art is often used to embody symbolic significance to its audience in any society. So, we can obtain much useful information from the arts, especially the artists' ideas and impulses. Sometimes they reflect some common consciousnesses of societies, but sometimes only individual's special thinking.

Art works are often regarded as the food to nourish human beings' spirit. We appreciate them for both styles and content. Someone say that the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. I totally agree with the assertion. However, I don't think it is all-inclusive. There is another function that arts play—to exteriorize the artist’s personal mental world.

We can’t deny that one of the most outstanding features of some kinds of arts is that they can demonstrate what exist around us, and even perform as the micro pictures of the whole society at times. This is something called “virtual reality”. As for the reason, we can see that individuals are actually cells in the community, and no one can completely isolate himself from others. This is a kind of human nature. Thus so, the material environment and social relations must have imposed great influences on the artists before the creation process of specific pieces of work. This can also explain why we can always find some traces which seem to stem from common phenomenon in our daily life. Among these arts styles, literature may be the most outstanding example. The Merchant of Venice, one of Shakespeare’s most well-known comedies, is a representative. The whole story reaches a climax when Shylock the renter, asked Antonio for a pound of flesh as the repayment for the debt. Actually, Shakespeare, the talented playwright, has revealed the naked money worship value system and distant people relations without a hint of humane care. Here literature creation methods have been skillfully blended with the reality, demonstrating as a sort of epitome. That’s among the factors to make this play a classic in literary realm, and that’s one of the most important values of literary works.

On the other hand, however, arts are not just the reflection of the objective world. Sometimes they are more the embodiment of one's inner world. Human beings have been endowed with skills to think and give judgment, which makes us superior to other animals. Therefore, art works, as the outputs of the process of thinking, must have strong personal tastes of the artists to show his independent thinking path. In fact, sometimes they are just an exteriorization of the author’s spiritual world, without special reference to the outside society. Take Van Gogh for example, he is the greatest painter in human history and is specifically praised and commended for his exceptional painting style different from others. In some of his pictures, you can hardly find a concrete object but accumulating colors in a complex way. Starry Night, his magnum opus, can be taken as an illustration. The whole picture gives people a sense of vertigo with the odd swirls and oppressing colors. Moreover, there is a strange three dimensional distance relations. For this picture, how can you understand it with sociological methods and give this painting an accurate social meaning, for they are just the exteriorization of Van Gogh’s twisted psychic state, without any clear link with other things?

Based on above, it is safe to say that artists have played two aspects of functions. One is on social level, for it reveals the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society, just as the speaker says. The other is to reflect the author’s personal point of view, to blend his opinions with social phenomenon or  even to convey his feelings only.

In the study of society and history, the arts from differing time and societies have always been regarded as one of the most important tools to understand special social ideas and impulses.

For example, you can find many poems and prose that only describe the literati’s sadness, happiness and the like to their own lives, from which we cannot(没有can not的写法.要么是can't. That is also why most of people are unable to find more but beauty from Beethoven's "moonlight sonata" and Van Gogh's "Sunflower". .

In sum, art is often used to embody symbolic significance to its audience in any society. So, we can obtain much useful information from the arts, especially the artists' ideas and impulses. Sometimes they reflect some common consciousnesses of societies, but sometimes only individual's special thinking.

Does the art reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society? The speaker’s assertion is basically reasonable. My supporting points based on that the arts, as a effective way, successfully convey the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. However, many art works appear to reflect aesthetic ideas instead ideas and impulses of a society.

As far as we know, human beings are indispensable elements of the society. There is no doubt that their views tightly relative to the society accordingly. In this sense, people often need to find an effective tool to reflect ideas of the society.

However, it is dangerous that the people express these ideas regardless of forms they use when we refer to times lacked of democracy or tyrannic countries. Therefore, the actions of people are limited because of the risk of crimes. Copernicus, who stilled to the theory that the sun is the center of space, was condemned to death by the governor who supported the theory that the earth is the center. In this sense, people have to disclose ideas and impulses of the society. Fortunately, the art, to some extent, appear to be a rich outpouring of abstract perspectives of human being. And meanwhile, the art is an adaptive form to hide the ideas because viewers need to speculate the ideas of art works related their subjective ideas and other imagination.

Many art works play important and successful roles in disclosing the otherwise obscure ideas and impulses of a society. On the one hand, realism in literary works reflect the facts of a society directly. The novel “The Uncle’s Cabin” by famous writer Stowe depicted the situation of black slaves in the early time of the United States. It revealed a desire for freedom and had a far-reaching influence in the history of the United States that lead to Civil War. On the other hand, some music works, from musician’s personal attitude, denote the impulses of the society indirectly. An apt example involves Beethoven. In his works, Beethoven gave voice through his music to the new trade of subjectivity and individualism that emerged in the wake of French Revolution.Beethoven disdained injustice and tyranny, and used his art to sing the praises of the Enlightenment, an 18th-century movement that promoted the ideals of freedom and equality.

Having recognizing that many arts appear to work well in disclosing hidden ideas and impulses of a society, by no means can we deny that many arts convey nothing about hidden ideas or impulses of the society. Consider the famous painter Xu Beihong. His works involved horses are highly appreciated based on his excellent painting skills. However, we can’t draw any information about hidden impulses of the society. Furthermore, we extent this situation to the arts involved surrealism. Take Dali as an example. It’s as a super realism painter that Dali is mostly frequently read today. His works, instead of revealing hidden ideas and impulses of the society, totally based on interior subconscious while apart from logic and cynosures.

So back to our topic, to some extent, since people have to hide ideas and impulses of the society based on pressure from the governments or others, and meanwhile, the arts owns vast advantages including reflecting abstract ideas as well conveying powerful , arts are suitable as a tool to reveal hidden ideas of the society. However, the speaker unfairly generalizes about arts since many other forms of arts fail to denote hidden ideas. It’s believed that most of the arts always mirrored society’s ideas and impulses, and probably always will.

Issue 131@Sonia
As far as I concerned, it can be reasonable to believe that arts reveal the hidden idea and impulses of an individual, but it must be absurd to claim that arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of the society.

According to what Freud had said about art, in essence, is a kind of release of individual lust, converting the human libido into creativity. It is through the work “of art”, concerning with the inner world rather than the outside one. In other words, arts express the ideas of its artists and if the artists’ idea is unusual or weird and against the common sense, the art can by no means express the idea of society.

Before the democracy and when it comes to time of monarchy, arts are the service for the monarch and aristocracy. Take those celebrated musicians such as Mozart, Haydn and Debussy for example. Once these musicians went out of the control of the government and royalty, they would be impoverished and have to live in a hard life. So did a myriad of painters, who aimed to work for aristocracy, which can offer them enough payment and living stuff. However, they would not have any rights to express their personal views and emotions but only for their employers if they became parts of the means for expirer to control the world.

As art is a hidden feeling, people need to use personal perspective when one comment in an art. Shakespeare has ever said: There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Audience are from different worlds, have different ethnics and complexions and their comments for arts are also relevant with their own experiences. Then what about the hidden ideas and impulses of a society? They are same to different people. So if we judge the hidden ideas and impulses through the comments of different individuals, we can get even opposite conclusions about the ideas of our society which is obviously ridiculous. In addition, if the hidden ideas of an art is not so obvious that everyone can tell, then whose review should be accepted?
The evaluations of arts from different interests and perspectives are quite different. So we can hardly tell the hidden ideas and impulses of a society from an art.

While there is one exception, for those artists who never make their art for profits and status but make art for art, the speaker’s statement seems to be reasonable. Take Van Gogh as an example. Earthy Potato Eaters (1885, Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh, Amsterdam), which depicts peasants at their meager evening meal. Dark and somber, sometimes crude, these early works demonstrate van Gogh’s sympathy for working people and his intense desire to express the misery and poverty of humanity as he saw them among the miners in Belgium.

To sum up, arts indeed express the artists’ ideas and attitudes toward life and society, but if we only use one or a few pieces of art or some commentary to judge the inside ideas and impulses of society, then we can never get the objective or just evaluation about our society.

131 The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

BY 小爱

The speaker claims that the arts reveal society’ s hidden ideas and umpulses. In my view I tend to agree with it .After all, art is an importane element of a society, it can more or less reflect the society ‘s level. While in many sorts of art forms, the speaker unfairly generalizeas about the merit of arts. That is , the art reveal the artists’ own aesthetic ideas and understanding about the art.

In the first place, I agree with the contention insofar that the art indeed reveal many society’s hidden demand or ideas. Let take construction for instance, in medieval , there were many grand church of Europe and ancient pyramids, which were very tall, have big cove and rise upward the sky and heavens, all these symbolize the sovereign power of dominator, the purpose of them was built to honor authority and deities. In current society, people lay more emphasis on practicalism and comfortability. So today when the constructor built the building ,they would take into account many factors such as, what direction does the construction face can get more sunshine, how to build it can save more money, and should care about the different attitudes of different people about the construction ‘s size and purpose and so forth. Today’s construction during twentieth century the constructions are built with steel-forged and  there are many sky-scraping building such as the Empire Mansion in Newyork and Finance Building in Shanghai. These forms reflect modern, more concern for industrial and technological progress.

In the second place, consider the paintings and some movies. It seems to me that the art of previous centuries reflected the attitudes and ideas of the society to a far extent. For example, Renaissance artists emphasized certain Christian themes, there were many painters use goddess for subject matter, the most famous painting was Rapheal ’s “Sistine Madonna”. This was a respect to Trinity. Consider next to movies in current society, today’s world is a high–technological developed society, the movies are full of element current society , such as sex liberation , high technology used and so on. An apt illustration of this point involves the movie “Star Wars” which can be seen as the most outstanding work about illustration and fantacy and impress the people’s desire for high technology. Through this can we know the shadow of our society.

However, though the arts are one of important treasure of human being, they are admittedly created by great artists . They mostly reveal the artists’  own emotions and ideas .For example , Picasso’s painting styles which varied all reflected the complex psychological character about himself. Another example is mona lisa , a lady smiling but flowig sadness from her eyes, lets people know the complexity of humans' spirits world, but ultimately it also a mystory in the history, and just a splendid working by Da vinci and the public can only read the beauty from it. From this level, the arts reveal the explicit ideas of artists themselves.

To sum up, some respects of arts can always mirrored society’s ideas and umpulses. However, in some repects such as paintings, the arts only reveal the ideas and thoughts about the artists.

From our ancestors' carving on rocks to nowadays computer aided drawings, arts are always a part of our society and interact with our society in a complex way. In other words, the implication or connotation of works of art is infulenced by the conditions of the relative society. What's more, the artists' capabilities and talents also serve as an essential element in determinating the role of arts in a society.

In the first place, there is no denying the fact that arts such as painting, music, literature and so forth reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society which lacks democracy or has some flaws. Since it is the nature of human to express their attitudes, no matter good or not, towards the circumstance they live, and when people live in such a society in which they can not express their attitudes freely, art becomes the best way to reflect their complains. That is to say, art in this situations is one of the best ways to reveal the hidden ideas of a society. For example, Picasso, a famous Spanish painters in World War two, drew an abstract paintings of a bomb city to express the public hidden ideas about people's sorrow towards the death which can not be expressed freely in a normal way. In this sense, arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of such a society in a more safe way.

However, when we come to a harmonious society in which everyone can express their attitudes in a free way, art turns to be a tool to reflect the wonderfulness of this society. On one hand, because people can live comfortably in this society with sufficient resources for the needs of every aspect of their life, their eyes are full of greatness of the society and no defect about it in their mind. The arts, which root in people's life, are mostly used to reflect this wonderful world for the reason that artists are hard to find out any complains to the society from the people. For instance, Panorama of Along the River During Qingming Festival, created in the Song dynasty of China, reveales the wonderful society of that time. On the other hand, in this society, artists themselves pay more attention to their own interests rather than issues of the society as a whole. Such as composers of our nowadays, they just compose some songs about what they concern such as love and money rather than the problems, for example, poverty and inequality, in society. So if people live in a comfortable life, arts is tend to be used to extol the society.

What's more, artists' personal capabilities, talents and concerns can also influence the content of works of arts. We can take photographers as an example to illustrate this point. While some photographers who concern about the ugly aspects of society such as war, starvation, poverty, discrimination and so forth take photos to reveal those unpleasant phenomena, others who pay more attention to the beautiful natural scenery take photos of these beautiful things to make us happy. So different artists' interests are various, their works of course are not for the same purpose. When we appreciate a masterpiece, the background of its author cannot be ignored.

To sum up, the influence of the society's conditions and the arts' characteristics plays an essential role in the connection between arts and society. When we come to analyse the substantial of arts, we should think about it in a comprehensive way.

Let us  take construction for instance,(是不是句号呢?下面再其一段) in medieval , there were many grand church(churches) of(in) Europe and ancient pyramids(in Egypt), which were(are) very tall, have big coveS and rise upward the sky and heavens, (前面是一句完整的话,后面是一具完整的话,这两句之间要么从起,要么用个连词吧)all these symbolize the sovereign power of dominator, and the purpose of them was built(is) to honor authority and deities. In current society, people lay more emphasis on practicalism and comfortability. So today when the constructor built the building ,they would take into account many factors such as, what direction does the construction face can get more sunshine(有问题), how to build it can save more money, and (they)should care about the different attitudes of different people about the construction ‘s size and purpose and so forth. Today’s construction during twentieth century the constructions(去掉) are built with steel-forged and  there are many sky-scraping building such as the Empire Mansion in Newyork and Finance Building in Shanghai.(这两个例子要说明什么问题呢?) These forms reflect modern, more concern for industrial and technological progress.
In the second place, consider the paintings and some movies. It seems to me that the art of previous centuries(前几个世纪有电影吗?) reflected the attitudes and ideas of the society to a far extent. For example, Renaissance artists emphasized certain Christian themes, there were many painters use goddess for subject matter, the most famous painting was Rapheal ’s “Sistine Madonna”. This was(is) a respect to Trinity. Consider next to movies in current society, today’s world is a high–technological developed society, the movies are full of element current society(current society's elements) , such as sex liberation , high technology used(using) and so on. An apt illustration of this point involves the movie “Star Wars” which can be seen as the most outstanding work about illustration and fantacy and impress the people’s desire for high technology. Through this can we know the shadow of our society.
However(没有转折的意思啊), though the arts are one of important treasure of human being, they are admittedly created by great artists . They mostly reveal the artists’  own emotions and ideas .For example , Picasso’s painting styles which varied all reflected the complex psychological character about himself. Another example is mona lisa , a lady smiling but flowig sadness from her eyes, lets people know the complexity of humans' spirits world, but ultimately it also a mystory in the history, and just a splendid working by Da vinci and the public can only read the beauty from it这胡话很有问题. From this level, the arts reveal the explicit ideas of artists themselves.
To sum up, some respects of arts can always mirrored society’s ideas and umpulses. However, in some repects such as paintings, the arts only reveal the ideas and thoughts about the artists.

ISSUE131The arts (painting, music, literature, etc) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

When we walk along a street, maybe we can see a musician playing, or a painter drawing. Their works always contain some kind of mood. There is a point that arts, such as painting, music, literature, reflect hidden ideas and impulses of a society. From my perspective, I agree with the assertion. My view will be greatly substantiated by the following discussion.

We should have the idea what is an art at first. Is the picture drew by a child in a kindergarten never know anything about painting an art? Obviously, we would say no. The judge whether a work is an art or not refers to the definition and nature of art. Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotion. The nature of art has been defined as a vehicle for the expression or communication of emotions and ideas, a means for exploring and appreciating formal elements for their own sake, and as mimesis or representation. According to the definition, we can infer the following meanings of the issue.

Arts can reflect the reality of the real world. Take Along the River During the Mingqing Festival, an 12th century painting in China originally attributed to the Song Dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan as an example. It captures the daily life of people from the Song period at the capital. The theme celebration the festive spirit and worldly commotion at the Qingming Festival, rather than the holiday's ceremonial aspects. The entire piece was painted in hand scroll format and the content reveals the lifestyle of all levels of the society from rich to poor as well as different economic activities in rural areas and the city. So in this case, we can see paintings can reveal the real world.

Admittedly, arts can imply life insights of artists. Most artists who produce art works have tortuous experience. Such as Du Fu, a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty. He was born in a turbulent times which suggested that he should suffer a lot. His poems have come to be hugely influential in Chinese literary culture because his poems contain a large scale of life insights.

Furthermore, arts can show the pursuit of better things. Just as Percy Shelley, one of the major English Romantic poets, said if winter comes, can spring be far behind. It describes a hope for the better future. Take Egmont, a set of incidental music pieces, wrote by Beethoven, a German composer and pianist, as an example. At the end of the music, it shows a strong will that people want to live in a freedom country and also a better life.

To sum up, I believe arts can reflect the reality of the real world, can imply life insights of individual artist, also can show the pursuit of better things. Arts is the eternal topic of human being.

131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."

I strongly agree the statement. However, sometimes, people ignore what the arts reveal. Critical works of the arts are helpful for us to realize these hidden ideas and impulses.

To begin with, materials of arts are from real life. Then, through the studies of different kinds of arts, we can understand some hidden ideas and factors of a society. ‘David Rockefeller Memoirs’, a famous biography, which is based on the history of Rockefeller’s family, provide an important access for us to understand the hidden rules of American economy. Film, ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, which describes the damage of a serious environmental problem ‘Greenhouse Effect’, tells public that expenditure on protecting biosphere is indispensable. These literatures, movies, paintings, etc. are based on the truths and problems in our daily life, so we can learn some hidden ideas and factors of a society from them.

Moreover, there are other elements in arts, such as the imagination, the exaggeration and so on, which not only provide a great deal of attitudes and meanings, but also offer people opportunities to reflect their deed and find the essentials of problems. For example, ‘Terminator’ is a famous scientific movie, which images our planet may be controlled by robots in future if we continue developing artificial intelligence (AI). This film, on the other hand, provides a platform to discuss questions such as whether we should develop this technology, and what we should notice. ‘The Old Man and The Sea’ written by Mr. Hemingway tells a story of a senior fisherman. “A man can be destroyed but not defeated” reveals people’s spirit and courage when facing setbacks. Therefore, these elements help people to find the hidden ideas, essentials, impulses of a society.

However, these hidden ideas and impulses are hard to be realized or cognized. One reason is that people, sometimes, mainly focus on enjoying themselves whereas seldom notice the revelations of arts. Take myself for example; I like reading novels for some of them are very interesting and can make me laugh, However, I rarely consider the questions like why the authors write those novels, the experience of the authors, and so on. Another reason is that without critical works, laymen and tyros cannot realize them. There are introductions to a painting or an opera; a movie is attached by a critic. These introductions and critics are used to indicate what the arts want to present. For example, painting, ‘The Gleaners ’, depicts three peasant women gleaning a field of stray grains of wheat after the harvest. Maybe without critics and introductions, we just know little about its meaning, which shows “the contrast between wealth and poverty, power and helplessness, male and female spheres is forcefully rendered.” So, to this point, critic works are necessary for the arts.

In short, I agree with the speaker. To learn more about the hidden ideas and impulses of a society from the arts, it is helpful to read some critic works and introductions.

Issue 131@Sonia
As far as I concerned, it can be reasonable to believe that arts reveal the hidden idea and impulses of an individual, but it must be absurd to claim that arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of the society.
According to what Freud had said, art, in essence, is a kind of release of individual lust, converting the human libido into creativity.

They are same to different people(这里是不是表达错了?).
So if we judge the hidden ideas and impulses through the comments of different individuals, we can get even opposite conclusions about the ideas of our society which is obviously ridiculous. In addition, if the hidden ideas of arts are not so obvious that everyone can tell, then whose review should be accepted?

I131  by 321
Arts serve as recreational instruments in every period. I consider that arts not only reveal the ideas and impulses of a society, whether hidden or not, but also express individual feelings.

In the art of painting, the changes of styles and motifs about them reflect social changes. In the ancient times in China, paintings are always simple and concrete, such as Qi Baishi's lobster. These simple paintings reflect relaxed and ease life with people. With technology improves nowadays, paintings are becoming difficult and abstract as a fact. One reason is that artists could use various kinds of elements to decorate their paintings, the other reason is that life become more difficult and multicultural. Faced with the modern paintings, we do not know what the painter wants to transmit, it must be congregated with diverse colors and reflect the painter's abstract feelings about the society. We could see shift about society through changes of paintings.

Architectures reflect a broad variety of social culture, spirit and the like. Architectures in different countries reflect the citizens' disciplines and virtues. For example, the traditional architectures in some Western countries are in the form of castles, which reflect the history and cultures of these countries. Citizens in those countries reserve their traditional architectures for member their history. More than a traditional architecture in China reflects the historical process of Chinese people. To be added, different architectures also reflect various social cultures and values in one country, especially some distinct buildings. For instance, the architecture in Tibet reflects people’s culture and belief in that city, which is differ from any other cities. Thus we can conclude that the art of architecture reflects social cultures and ideas between diverse countries and communities.

Finally, the arts of literature and music reflect contemporary social motifs and ideas and individual internal characters. No matter traditional arts or modern arts of literature and music, they are all representative of ideas and impulses of its contemporary society. The novel Ordinary World, written by Lu Yao, reflects rural and city life of Chinese people in Age of Reform. We can learn the condition at this period from the novel, which present clear characters. When it comes to music, the modern music could reflect people's prospect and inner feelings. It could be demonstrated by the sprung out of pop music at present. Artists express their individual characters and ideas through such a way. With time passes, new arts of literature and music would spring out instead of old ones.

In the end,  we can come to the conclusion that in the art of painting, changes between these things reflect shifts of society. The art of architecture reflect a broad variety of social cultures, virtues, spirits and the like. Furthermore, the arts of literature and music reflect contemporary social motifs and ideas and individual feelings.

131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
I strongly agree(with) the statement . However, sometimes, people ignore what the arts reveal. Critical works of the arts are helpful for(to) us to realize these hidden ideas and impulses. however放在这里是不是有点突兀了,因为你还是同意作者的。

Therefore, these elements help people to find the hidden ideas, essentials,(我觉得这中间换成and) impulses of a society.

However, thesesomehidden ideas and impulses are hard to be realized or cognized. One reason is that people, sometimes, mainly focus on enjoying themselves whereas seldom notice the revelations of arts. Take myself for example;(分号这边是不是不合适) I like reading novels for some of them are very interesting and can make me laugh, However, I rarely consider the(删)questions like why the authors write those novels, the experience of the authors, and so on. (are necessary for us to understand the arts)

In short, I agree with the speaker. To learn more about the hidden ideas and impulses of a society from the arts, it is helpfulfor us to read some critic works and introductions.

Issue 131 The arts (painting, music, literature, etc) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

Looking back at the splendid and glorious history of our history since the appearance of human beings, marveling at the great and success inventions and discoveries, for numerous times we realize that it is the art that makes dispensable contribution to the development and advances of our civilizations, furthermore many people propose that arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. As for me, I agree with the statement and but we should also note that there are still other methods plays significant role in revealing the inner impulses and ideas of our society.

Firstly, arts, including various modes such as literature, painting, music and so forth, often play a role of expressing the ideas and values of the artists and the people holding the same thoughts, which are sometimes the thoughts that not dominating the society and the time and being forgot by the public. For instance, the painting—milkmaid—depicting a woman living in the rural area pouring milk into the bottle with the clam and peaceful facial expression, which indicates the harmony live and the inner peace of the people and their satisfying the such happiness but lacking of challenges and passions. However, nearly in every period of our human history, the world is fraught with numerous challenges and battles, competition comes from nearly every corner of our daily life making us feel depression and confused, especially in our modern society surrounded by endless and new emerged scientific inventions and advances. Most people live a life that is opposed with the one revealing in the painting—milkmaid, and ideas and values the people expecting no great success and glorious reputation usually companied with serious crisis and even setbacks, are often ignored by our busy society and the painting becomes the proper mean informing the public of those. Hence, the arts do reveal certain hidden values and thoughts of a society.

Secondly, the arts also contribute to the revealing the impulses of our society, though the art works, those impulses are better propagate and understood. For example, the song—heal the world—written by Michael Jackson, telling the world itself the aspiration for peace, telling the government and politicians that started the war the inner voice of the people both the people suffering and not suffering. Since the prevalence of the song, more and more people join the group that supports the peace and harmony while resisting the violence and crimes which results common citizens being the ultimate victims. The arts truly make a contribution to making the inner impulses of the society revealed and advances and prosperity of our civilizations.

Thirdly, often, the artists are the individuals that holding a broader horizon and insights of our current society, thus, they may put forwards ideas and beliefs dominating the direction of our advances, and express those trends in the arts—the way that they are skilled in.

However, it also should be noted that arts is not the only way revealing the otherwise hidden beliefs of our society, policies, the way people behave, wear, speak, also help indicating the hidden impulses and ideas of people. For instance, after the “9.11”, it is much hard for foreigners to embrace the access to America, which reveals the inner ideas of Americans who have suffered the terror attacks—protecting their secure motherland and decreasing the possibly of being the victims of national terrorism. This particular instance shows other methods telling the ideas and thoughts hidden behind the society as well.

From what has been discussed above we may safely draw the conclusion that the arts do reveal the hidden ideas, thoughts and impulses of our society while there are still many other methods playing the same role as arts, which we should not ignore.

I fundamentally agree with the speaker on the assertion that exposes the covered ideas and impulses of our community. Nevertheless, it is so absolute that the art might not represents the view of the majority, and then it presents the subjective thoughts of the artist. Thus, not any arts could show the realistic society and provide impulses to push forward the world

Along with the developments of our world, the artists’ works might exhibit the social issues and reflects all the aspects of the social phenomenon of that period, even irony the incompetence of the authority or reveal the miserable life of the bottom labors, and then ultimately some significant literatures could motivate the developments of society. The artists’ thoughts derive from their sensitive insights which enable them to discover social appearances deeply covered in the society. On the other hand, before an impressive work have been composed, almost every successful artist might have an impressing experience which might be a profound taste of the dark society or the suffering from the raw deal, they might witness the social famine and cruel reality. These feelings should make them mature and tough enough to survive, then express their thoughts in their compositions. The Russian painter’s composition Volga Boatmen reflects the labors arduous life, and the situation in which the poverty afflicts the working people of the seamy side. Like Repin’s works, these artist’ works would reveal the hidden phenomenon which the upper-class could not see explicitly. And ultimately, these thoughts push forward the progress or reformation of the world.

However, not all arts could promote the society’s development, some kinds of arts have only stood for their author’ subjective feelings which represent the unrealistic realization and the negative or fallacious view of that period. These thoughts would give a negative affection to the society to delay the development. Also, some concepts covered in the arts might not fit the world along with the progress of the community, these concepts might be replaced by more excellent ones. One of the famous works that stood for the utopian socialism is Utopia written by Tomas More. In this book, it depicts an world in which the socialism has been realized. However, his thoughts are so theoretical that in the actual world it could not been archived. Thus, these thoughts would misunderstand the people that the world could be ideal like that so that they dream out their time and make the progress bog down.

In sum, although the arts are so splendid and make a contribution to the human’ progress and world’s development, yet if we should recognize the art that represents the negative concept which would restrict the improvements of society, and then they would make a significant affection to human

A. Lowell once said: books are more than books. They are the life, the very heart and core of ages past, the reason why men lived and worked and died; the essence and quintessence of their lives. Of course, not only books as a form of arts, but other forms of arts including painting, musical etc all reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulse of a society as well as the inner world of individuals. The arts as a form of aesthetic appreciation, its fundamental purpose is to depict the feeling and attitudes of individuals or the behavior of a fixed target in a society. Many artistic works whether painting, music or literature etc, all express the author emotion or affection or outlook of life or depiction of social phenomenon.
For instance, Camille Pissarro was one of the most influential members of the French Impressionist movement. Many of his compositions concerned on landscape, such as he painted many series of different aspects of cities, Paris, Rouen and his home Eragny etc, with varying light and weather effects and limned image of different cities. Paul Cezanne, one of the most famous artists, once said: “Pissarro was one of the painters most closed to nature”. Now we could know about clearly cities condition – architectural construction or city layout etc, or natural scenery or life style in that year by Pissarro’s painting. Painting and music through sound or color or shape most vividly embody the spirits and character of a society.
Additionally, books as an important tool to embody the literature have much more influence than other forms of the arts. By reading literature, whether those books we read in schools or those books for entertainment or for scientific research etc, we get to know not only the experience of a society, but also the hidden ideas and impulse of the society. For example, by reading history books, we could know the law of social development; social formation and radical revolution in the past etc. and we could learn much experience from history and prevent something- calamity, blunder etc recurrence. Many artistic work such novels, stories also express the author’s affection and emotion or reflect social condition. For example, of human bondage, a novel by William Somerset Maugham is the story of Philip Carey, an orphan eager for life, love and adventure. It is the first and most autobiographical of Maugham’s masterpiece, while generally agreed to be his masterpiece and strongly autobiographical in nature. Another example, Ernest Hemingway, novelist and short-story writer, was one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Most of his works focused on those people living essential, dangerous lives – soldiers, fishermen, athletes, bullfighters, who meet the pain and difficulty of their existence with stoic courage in that year. Such as his first novel: The sun also rises, which encapsulates the angst of the post-world war I generation, known as the Lost Generation. It is a poignantly beautiful story of a group of American and English expatriates in Paris on an excursion to Pamplona and demonstrates an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions,
As above mentioned that the arts including painting, musical, literature etc ,especially for those great arts, reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulse of a society. However, we must know that there still have other forms such as technological development would reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulse of a society other than the arts.

"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."

By snow

There is no doubt that we can get happiness , cultivate our temperament from arts and the development of arts is accompanied with the development of human beings. Just because of this , the speaker says that the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society, I quiet agree with this statement . In fact ,arts not only represent the ideas and impulses of a society ,but also it can hide some thoughts such as emotion, ideality , desire personally. Also ,we may never understand what the arts reflect.

Without a doubt, it is a method to study history by researching the arts in that period such as music ,poem ,painting and so forth because of artists often conveyed their emotions through their work. For example, the song “hand in hand” which was song at the Olympic Games in 1988 reflected the desire to let people who had different colors, from different races and countries feel the Olympic spirits. Another example , during World War 2,Germany used his air power to commit such experimental horrors as the bombing of the defenseless little township of Guernica. In order to convey anger and reflect the outrage which was made by Germany army , Piccaso created the painting “Guernica”. In many cases, the arts provide a mirror of social consciousness, from which we can learn the hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

However, some arts merely present individual thinking instead of ideas and impulses of a society. Different people ,different circumstance, different suffering can bring artists inspiration from which they can create their work . These works only represent the artists own desire , emotion, views, angers and so forth. For example , Van Gogh's studies of old men are drawn with compassion and understanding .Some poems often reflect people’s toward to beautiful life . Some music just reflects  people’s longing for love. Therefore, we can’t hope to obtain the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society by the arts because of they only reflect individually.

Also , maybe it is a mystery forever for that some arts such as “Mona Lisa” represent.

Based above , it is safe to say that arts can reflect very much. They can reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society, they can reflect artist’s own emotion , and they can also represent something that we can never get .

A. Lowell once said: books are more than books. They are the life, the very heart and core of ages past, the reason why men lived and worked and died; the essence and quintessence of their lives(
Of course, not only books as a form of arts(缺少谓语动词吧), but other forms of arts including painting, musical etc all reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulse of a society as well as the inner world of individuals. The arts as a form of aesthetic appreciation(不懂这种写法行不), its fundamental purpose is to depict the feeling and attitudes of individuals or the behavior of a fixed target in a society. Many artistic works whether(whether不合适吧,chingese的嫌疑,改为works as no matter what ) painting, music or literature etc, all express(单复数前后对应) the author(author’s) emotion or affection or outlook of life or depiction of social phenomenon.

For instance, Camille Pissarro was one of the most influential members of the French Impressionist movement. Many of his compositions concerned on landscape, such as he painted many series of different aspects of cities, Paris, Rouen and his home Eragny etc, with varying light and weather effects and limned image of different cities. Painting and music through sound or color or shape most vividly embody the spirits and character of a society.

Additionally, books as an important tool to embody the literature have much more influence(名词?) than other forms of the arts. By reading literature, whether(无论不能这么表达,老毛病) those books we read in schools or those books for entertainment or for scientific research etc(这种排比,举例形式是和上面一样,很别扭,很不通顺,建议采取其他的方式), we get to know not only the experience of a society, but also the hidden ideas and impulse of the society. For example, by reading history books, we could know the law of social development; social formation and radical revolution in the past etc. and we could learn much experience from history and prevent something- calamity, blunder etc recurrence. Many artistic work(是想说研究吗?) such novels, stories also express the author’s affection and emotion or reflect social condition. For example, of human bondage, a novel(written) by William Somerset Maugham is the story of Philip Carey, an orphan eager for life, love and adventure. It is the first and(the) most autobiographical of Maugham’s masterpiece, while generally agreed to be his masterpiece and strongly autobiographical in nature. As above mentioned that the arts including painting, musical, literature etc especially for those great arts(改为As the mention above ,arts including painting, musical ,literature , especially the great ones), reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulse of a society. However, we must know that there still have(having) other forms such as technological development would reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulse of a society other than the arts.
