131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
I strongly agree the statement. However, sometimes, people ignore what the arts reveal. Critical works of the arts are helpful for us to realize these hidden ideas and impulses.
To begin with, materials of arts are from real life. Then, through the studies of different kinds of arts, we can understand some hidden ideas and factors of a society. ‘David Rockefeller Memoirs’, a famous biography, which is based on the history of Rockefeller’s family, provide an important access for us to understand the hidden rules of American economy. Film, ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, which describes the damage of a serious environmental problem ‘Greenhouse Effect’, tells public that expenditure on protecting biosphere is indispensable. These literatures, movies, paintings, etc. are based on the truths and problems in our daily life, so we can learn some hidden ideas and factors of a society from them.
Moreover, there are other elements in arts, such as the imagination, the exaggeration and so on, which not only provide a great deal of attitudes and meanings, but also offer people opportunities to reflect their deed and find the essentials of problems. For example, ‘Terminator’ is a famous scientific movie, which images our planet may be controlled by robots in future if we continue developing artificial intelligence (AI). This film, on the other hand, provides a platform to discuss questions such as whether we should develop this technology, and what we should notice. ‘The Old Man and The Sea’ written by Mr. Hemingway tells a story of a senior fisherman. “A man can be destroyed but not defeated” reveals people’s spirit and courage when facing setbacks. Therefore, these elements help people to find the hidden ideas, essentials, impulses of a society.
However, these hidden ideas and impulses are hard to be realized or cognized. One reason is that people, sometimes, mainly focus on enjoying themselves whereas seldom notice the revelations of arts. Take myself for example; I like reading novels for some of them are very interesting and can make me laugh, However, I rarely consider the questions like why the authors write those novels, the experience of the authors, and so on. Another reason is that without critical works, laymen and tyros cannot realize them. There are introductions to a painting or an opera; a movie is attached by a critic. These introductions and critics are used to indicate what the arts want to present. For example, painting, ‘The Gleaners ’, depicts three peasant women gleaning a field of stray grains of wheat after the harvest. Maybe without critics and introductions, we just know little about its meaning, which shows “the contrast between wealth and poverty, power and helplessness, male and female spheres is forcefully rendered.” So, to this point, critic works are necessary for the arts.
In short, I agree with the speaker. To learn more about the hidden ideas and impulses of a society from the arts, it is helpful to read some critic works and introductions.

ISSUE131:The arts (painting, music, literature, etc) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
When we walk along a street, maybe we can see a musician playing, or a painter drawing. Their works always contain some kind of mood. There is a point that arts, such as painting, music, literature, reflect hidden ideas and impulses of a society. From my perspective, I agree with the assertion. My view will be greatly substantiated by the following discussion.
We should have the idea what an art is at first. Is the picture drew by a child in a kindergarten never know anything about painting an art? Obviously, we would say no. The judge whether a work is an art or not refers to the definition and nature of art. Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotion. The nature of art has been defined as a vehicle for the expression or communication of emotions and ideas, a means for exploring and appreciating formal elements for their own sake, and as mimesis or representation. According to the definition, we can infer the following meanings of the issue.
Arts can reflect the reality of the real world. Take Along the River During the Qingming Festival, an 12th century painting in China originally attributed to the Song Dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan as an example. It captures the daily life of people from the Song period at the capital. The theme celebration the festive spirit and worldly commotion at the Qingming Festival, rather than the holiday's ceremonial aspects. The entire piece was painted in hand scroll format and the content reveals the lifestyle of all levels of the society from rich to poor as well as different economic activities in rural areas and the city. So in this case, we can see paintings can reveal the real world.
Admittedly, arts can imply life insights of artists. Most artists who produce art works have tortuous experience. Such as Du Fu, a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty. He was born in a turbulent times which suggested that he should suffer a lot. His poems have come to be hugely influential in Chinese literary culture because his poems contain a large scale of life insights.
Furthermore, arts can show the pursuit of better things. Just as Percy Shelley, one of the major English Romantic poets, said if winter comes, can spring be far behind. It describes a hope for the better future. Take Egmont, a set of incidental music pieces, wrote by Beethoven, a German composer and pianist, as an example. At the end of the music, it shows a strong will that people want to live in a freedom country and also a better life.
To sum up, I believe arts can reflect the reality of the real world, can imply life insights of individual artist, also can show the pursuit of better things. Arts is the eternal topic of human being.

As far as I concerned, it can be reasonable to believe that arts reveal the hidden idea and impulses of an individual, but it must be absurd to claim that arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of the society.
According to what Freud had said, art, in essence, is a kind of release of individual lust, converting the human libido into creativity. It is through the work “of art”, concerning with the inner world rather than the outside one. In other words, arts express the ideas of its artists and if the artists’ idea is unusual or weird and against the common sense, the art can by no means express the idea of society.
Before the democracy and when it comes to time of monarchy, arts are the service for the monarch and aristocracy. Take those celebrated musicians such as Mozart, Haydn and Debussy for example. Once these musicians went out of the control of the government and royalty, they would be impoverished and have to live in a hard life. So did a myriad of painters, who aimed to work for aristocracy, which can offer them enough payment and living stuff. However, they would not have any rights to express their personal views and emotions but only for their employers if they became parts of the means for expirer to control the world.
As art is a hidden feeling, people need to use personal perspective when one comment in an art. Shakespeare has ever said: There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Audience are from different worlds, have different ethnics and complexions and their comments for arts are also relevant with their own experiences. Then what about the hidden ideas and impulses of a society? They are same to different people(这里是不是表达错了?).
So if we judge the hidden ideas and impulses through the comments of different individuals, we can get even opposite conclusions about the ideas of our society which is obviously ridiculous. In addition, if the hidden ideas of arts are not so obvious that everyone can tell, then whose review should be accepted? The evaluations of arts from different interests and perspectives are quite different. So we can hardly tell the hidden ideas and impulses of a society from an art.
While there is one exception, for those artists who never make their art for profits and status but make art for art, the speaker’s statement seems to be reasonable. Take Van Gogh as an example. Earthy Potato Eaters (1885, Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh, Amsterdam), which depicts peasants at their meager evening meal. Dark and somber, sometimes crude, these early works demonstrate van Gogh’s sympathy for working people and his intense desire to express the misery and poverty of humanity as he saw them among the miners in Belgium.
To sum up, arts indeed express the artists’ ideas and attitudes toward life and society, but if we only use one or a few pieces of art or some commentary to judge the inside ideas and impulses of society, then we can never get the objective or just evaluation about our society.
