ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
Some Faculty Should Join Part-time Working Outside
Education is not only teaching students intellect but also helping them to become skillful before entering their careers. Requiring faculty to work outside would allow them to assimilate practical values into their teaching schemes.
While there is no such need for certain courses, such as history, liternature and pure arts.
Teachers bear the burden to mold students' soul, to tell ways of thinking, to foster ability to learning, and the more important is how to live a life. So how to know well about working, and get along well with others are essential for them.
Textbooks may show a lot of disciplines about the kancks, while they are dull to master and not flexible enough for the changing world. By contrast, practical examples and demonstration could solve this problem.
When i was in the university, a professor of urban ecology gave me deep impression in her class and almost every one of her student earned a lot from her. She usually paraphrased the complex definition with simple words, showed cases of her colleagues and bosses before, or compared with the programs she had participated in. Concerning the norm of "city ecology", a vivid sentence i remember is " the city we live in is just like a machine, and every one is the right nail addicting to it, with his own role and moving style.
When some of the nails contrast each other and move against others, the machine would be destroyed."
May be because of her rich experience and detailed demonstration that the disciplines become interesting and could be easily acquired.
Also, with part-time working in related areas, teachers could get well acquainted about the world outside so that could give students useful advice before they enter society. As teachers know what kinds of subjects will be well developed, what kinds of jobs will be welcome, some students may turn to these fields as early as possible.
As teachers know the difference of people' relationship between school and society, students could be taught about how to communicate with other workmates and leaders. What kinds of basic skills should be well mastered, what kind of liyi are needed, etc. All of which are necessary for a well-rounded person.
In addition, education is changing with time not fixed. Teachers with work knit of society may bring fresh air to the disciplines even make textbook improved. In universities especially, professors could find some theories outdated sometime.
However, it is no good for all kinds of faculties attending work, like literature and pure arts teachers. Different with science and social science, the aim of literature and arts is to give us truth, beauty, confidence and compassion as well as how to express our ideas in artistic ways. Practicality has nothing with them, though sometimes the publish of literature books indeed cause great benefits. But pure arts are not for money and fame.
Though combing with society is necessary for some faculties, balancing with teaching and working is more essetial, as teaching is the main role for a teacher. If not, work would influence the quality of education.
In a word, enrolled in society is good for some education except arts and literature. School might well encourage those teachers to take time working outside while keeping teaching priority. |
