ISSUE 13
"Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct."
许多世界上鲜为人知的语言由于越来越少的人使用而逐渐消失。使用这些语言的国家应该采取措施防止这些语言绝迹。
It is estimated there are six thousand languages in our planet, butthey are disappearing at an alarming rate, about one language per week. If rareplants and animals are precious, then languages should not be more precious and deserve better preservation? Governments in which minority languages are spokenand developed countries are obliged to make efforts to protect these languages.
As our world is going through globalization exponentially, the world becomes unprecedented homogeneous in terms of language, culture and everydaylife such as clothes and food. This increasing unity brings benefits and conveniences for humans. Today there are several universal, or official, languages acrossall continents, such as English, Chinese, Spanish. Universal languages offer usmerits in many aspects especially in everyday communication and academic. Forexample, there are dozens of nations in Europe, and although nearly everycountry has its own language, they actually speak only a couple of mainstream languages in public for communicating conveniently; in academic, foreign researchers can read original research papers to keep pace with state-of-the-art research results to avoid waiting for translation of original manuscripts. A report surveyed the top countries in research and hightechnology. The top one is undoubtedly America, but the second one is surprisingly Britain. Can it not be Japan or Germany? The survey concludes English is its mother language so that Britain researchers manage to absorbfirst-hand materials without translation. Another realworld example is international sports tournaments such as US Open. This event consists of many parts, players, referees, and journalists. Players all speak English in courtto communicate with referees; players also speak English in press conference. In this situation unified language indeed avoids many problems.
However, to our dismal, culture diversity has been seriously jeopardized by the lost of languages. What is the true value of language?Languages play an important role in human history served as a major means to record history and to inherit culture. Before language appeared, humans couldonly record events with simple symbols which was too inaccurate and hard tomaintain large amount of information. Language represents culture that through language, we understand its people and traditions. If we want to know onecountry, the best approach is to learn its language. For example, in Japanese verbs have many forms that if you speak to a higher level person, the verb shouldbe used in an appropriate form. So it can be inferred Japanese is a country ofdeep hierarchy. Language can also exert influence on thinking pattern. In Western countries in which languages usually consist of literals, Western people think in a linear manner, while in Asia where languages are comprised of complex symbols, they think is a non-linear fashion. Without languages, we might be still in primitive age, for culture heritance becomes difficult, not mention to developing science and technology,
It is also worth to explore why languages are disappearing at analarming rate. Some minority languages are used in remote areas even inprimitive tribes; thus limited condition and technology hinder locals maintaining and developing languages. The second cause is we attach muchemphasis on mainstream and neglect those minorities. Minorities are equally important because each one is an indispensible element of the world’s diversity.
When the time that our plant speaks only a few languages, it will be a disaster for mankind because what we have lost is not only languages but cultures they represent. Hence the government of countries in which the minority languages are spoken as well as developed countries should make effective measures to preserve those languages. For example, setup curriculum of minority languages, use high technology to preserve languages. |
