花了不少时间写的一篇argument,汗...大家随便拍哈
28. The following is a recommendation from the dean at Foley College, a small liberal arts college, to the president of the college.
"Since college-bound students are increasingly concerned about job prospects after graduation, Foley College should attempt to increase enrollment by promising to find its students jobs after they graduate. Many
administrators feel that this strategy is a way for Foley to compete against larger and more prestigious schools
and to encourage students to begin preparing for careers as soon as they enter college. Furthermore, a student
who must choose a career path within his or her first year of college and who is guaranteed a job after
graduation is more likely to successfully complete the coursework that will prepare him or her for the future."

In this argument, the author recommends that Foley College should promise finding jobs for its students after their graduation, and believes this approach can help to increase enrollment. To support this recommendation, the author points out that many administrators see this strategy as a way to compete with other schools in attracting students. Furthermore, the author believes that a student who is guaranteed a job will pay more attention to coursework. After careful scrutiny of this recommendation, I find it is problematic because of several flaws.

First of all, to increase enrollment, Foley College should understand what do the students really need, and what are their expectations about college and their future. Only in this way, the school can make its policies meet the students' demands. But this argument provides nothing about students' attitude toward this strategy. On contrary, the author cites that many administrators welcome the suggestion. Perhaps the administrators' opinion is different from students'. Even if some administrators' opinion is the same as the students', I don't know the proportion of the administrators who welcome this strategy in total faculties. If there are also many administrators who oppose this recommendation, it's hard to tell the preference of all faculties.

Second, the author's recommendation relies on unfair assumption that students guaranteed future jobs are more likely to complete coursework and prepare for their future career. But this assumption is not supported by reliable evidence. Perhaps assuring jobs to students will circumscribe their ambitions and professional choices, even mislead them to work in a field which they have no interest in. Furthermore, an excellent student doesn't worry about future jobs, definitely, because strong abilities assure his or her competence in society.

In conclusion, this recommendation is unsubstantiated as it stands. The author should conduct a survey and provide real statistics to show Foley College will attract students by promising to find jobs for them. Without understanding the needs of current students, the author can't make sure that his or her recommendation will take effect. Moreover, maybe this strategy will pose negative influence on students in the long term by limiting their ambitions, whether it is beneficial is still questionable.
