Issue 50 “In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculties should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.”


The author asserts that all faculties should spend time working outside the academic world in their domains while they are teaching at college. I fundamentally agree with it. College is a circumstance which is very close to big society and teachers at college tend to be a leader rather than a trainer. Their task is more than impart traditional knowledge.


Obviously, the world is changing beyond our imagination. Considering computer technology, the history of it is no more than 100 years. Comparing to our human history, this tiny period of time has yet changed the whole world, even our lives styles. The consequence of development is the knowledge refreshed and created with a huge speed. Unfortunately, sometimes books in college libraries published few years age seems fall behind. To keep pace with modern society, students and teachers at college both need a new path to approach the latest information. The working experiences of teacher outside college can extend teachers’ eyesight, broaden teachers’ mind. Also, teachers can hold the direction of new technology and refresh their old knowledge which is out of date. Furthermore, teachers who have experiences in working can better combine the foundation in old books with improvement acquired from his working experience. If so, the knowledge studied by college students will be more widely, efficiently and practically.


The more important is: College and University are major educational services rather than liberal education. Students in college and university study not only paper knowledge but also real skills. With no experience in real action, students couldn’t survival in this competitive society for the reason that they can’t creative economics effect at once. Thus, the importance of working experience of teachers in college and university appears. While teachers is doing jobs outside college in relevant to his teaching course, he can brings his practical experience in teaching. To be a supplement of the paper knowledge, students can gain access to the real industry in classrooms and laboratories. When combines the theory with reality, students can suits this changing world without fear. Also, the real experience in working can improve and change the teachers’ teaching style in courses, teaches can put on some personal experience and real small experiment in order to increase the pleasure in classroom.


In addition, the job experience of teacher will be a channel between company and college in particular course. The earlier the students have experienced real job, the better they would adapt with it. With a stable interpersonal relationship in company, college teacher can also find the chance of practical training in his working company for students. What’s more, the research outcome in college can be easily taken into experiment in some company because of plenty of equipment.


However, even working outside the academic world and gain experience for teachers is a good things, it sometimes not pure. Redundant working outside will erode teachers’ exploring spirit for the reason of money and power and do harm for the teaching quality. Moreover, paper knowledge is also important as it can be considered foundation for students. They forms knowledge systems and contains lots of predecessor's experiences.


To sum up, the working experience outside the academic world for faculties is advanced in general. Whether how useful it is depends on the relationship between working and teaching realized by teachers. Nevertheless, as long as making a balance between these two aspects, the working experience outside the academic world for teachers will be a useful weapon in higher education.

Along with the development of our society and civilization, education people receive has been playing a more and more significant role in the progress of the world, the quality of instruction, especially at college and university which provide the most talented people for the society, has drawn huge attention of the public. Someone proposes that in order to improve the quality of instruction at college and university, it is necessary for all faculty to participate in working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. As for me, although this statement fails to fully take the characteristics of all subjects into consideration, I generally agree with this statement.

Admittedly, some subjects have little bearing on the work outside the academic world. Ignoring the characteristics of those subjects and compelling faculty teaching relevant courses to participate in the real world amounts the waste of time, energy and funding. Professors who teach literature should spend more time in reading relevant books and have a fuller and deeper comprehension of the literature rather than working for a public press to compile materials and data for them. Instead work outside the academy, Professors teaching mathematic analysis should delve in the analyzing already existed axioms and improve them so that they can be applied in a broader realm without such strict restrictions. Different subjects possess various characteristics; certain ones may suffer from the distraction of the outside work instead of benefiting from them.

However, having recognized the limitation of the measures the statement proposes, we also need to realize the vital importance of the measure since most subjects and professors, including quite a few students, could reap the benefits from the appliance of it.  Firstly, through real world experiences, the professors could gain clear and accurate understandings of the needs of the society and coordinate the teaching contents to satisfy those needs. For instance, college professors participating in the work thwarting the epidemic of H1N1 could better understand the knowledge and skills the professional experts in this realm need to possess and make a efficient and effective teaching plan to cultivate relevant experts. Just delving in the textbooks and being blind to the realistic needs, students could not meet the requirement of the work they may be confronted with after graduation.

Secondly, working outside academic world could offer professors novel and fresh perspectives of the course they teach. Understanding how those theories are applied in the real world, professors would certainly gain a deeper insight and broader comprehensions of what they major in, those knowledge and theories most widely used in real world should be emphasized in class while those have been abandoned in reality should be eliminated. Professors who work for the government could gain deeper understandings of the appliance of policies and the abilities efficient and effective officials need, only in this way professors could impart the most fresh knowledge to the students who determine to committed in the political career and make a brilliant achievement in politics.

Thirdly, knowledge is not limited in the campus of university and college, instead, most of the frontier knowledge and information is possessed by experts who work in the society. Through immediate and frequent communications and contacts with economic experts employed by financial and intelligence institutions, professors majoring in economics could gain the latest ideas and thoughts and measures that are dominating the economy in our current world while knowledge in textbooks are often unchanged since many years ago, which may has already lost its realistic meanings and impeded the understandings of the students. Knowledge professors teach should be refreshed so that they can keep the tempo of the fast changing world as well as their students.

From what has been discussed, we may safely draw the conclusion that in most realms professors could benefit from the real world work relevant with the course they teach, and their students could gain a better insights and comprehensive understanding of what they learn and the work they would be faced with after graduation, with the exception of certain subjects have little to do with experiences in the real world. After all, knowledge comes from experiences and should serve the real world.

Admittedly, I agree with the view that all faculties should spend some time in the courses they teach. However, spending too much time on that is unnecessary or even detrimental.

To begin with, it is necessary for faculty to pay some time and effort in the knowledge relevant to the courses they teach. There are several reasons. First, one of the purposes of universities or colleges is to cultivate students, whereas most of faculties are just familiar with narrow fields, generally. For example, a chemical lecturer may be only focus on or interested in the property of metals, which is a realm of inorganic chemistry. So if they want to teach courses, like inorganic chemistry, well, they must take time to study other parts. Second, mastering the knowledge outside the academic world in professions is good for their professional researches, because these theories may add tools to their studies. Many important contributions in science are made by those who inspired by the knowledge seems irrelevant to their professions. So, faculty should spend time and effort in the courses they teach.

However, spending too much time and effort in the works outside the academic world in professions may be detrimental to faculty themselves and the benefits of universities. Although cultivating students is an important task, the university is a place for investigations and researches. Besides, a student chooses a university, where they pursue their degrees, mainly according to the research standards in some realms. If their faculty cannot contribute a significant result, maybe these universities will lose a lot of excellent students. Moreover, college and university students learn knowledge not just from their teachers. Other ways are also available. For example, discussions are effective approaches. Therefore, if the faculties take too much time in the knowledge irrelevant to their professions, their investigations and researches may be delayed. And these things may influence the reputations of their universities.

According to what have been discussed above, paying some time in the knowledge of the courses they teach may be good for improving the quality of instruction at the college and university level. However, spending too much time and effort working outside the academic world in professions may be harmful for both teachers and universities.

The speaker claims so. I admit that working outside the academic world would bring many interests to high quality of instruction. However, it’s not necessary to ask all faculty to work outside while ignoring their regular job.

One thing I have to admit that in some scientific region, working outside the college companied with academic research indeed bring marvelous merits. On personal level, faculty who have experiences of working outside, touch up-to-date or marvelous technology they have never know before in university, and then are able to impart useful knowledge. From students’ attitude, they usually prefer to learn from the teachers who relate to the companies because it maybe brings them advantages in jobs in future. So they would become interests in learning. Take information technology as an example. Many famous universities, including Tsinghua university and Zhejiang university in China, National university in Singapore, often send faculty even students to work in Microsoft Asia Academe, which is considered as the strongest company in computer science. The results of the collaboration between these universities and Microsoft Corporation have brought not only many of best papers in top conferences, such as Siggraph, but also myriad of valuable patents and software technology. They earn great reputation for universities not only attract more good teachers, but also make them motivate and spur them to do better. Moreover, the cooperation brings universities vast majority of money which can used to set up new buildings and improve conditions in labs.

Having recognized that it is worthwhile for college faculty to work outside academe in professional positions related to their field, by no means can we deny that focusing on the job related to their field may yield devastating results. In fact, spending too many time means that the time used in teaching field is definitely limited. In modern time, more and more teachers operate companies outside. This results a lot of absence of classes and ignorance of research. As a result, the order of colleges would trap in chaos and students would suffer.

Moreover, it is not worthwhile for all faculty to spent their time working outside. Pure science such as mathematics and physics and other special up-to-data science, including cloning technology, involves single research. It is not necessary to find jobs for improving quality of instruction of colleges. Yet even though it is necessary to find jobs, there are few jobs even no job left for faculty.

In the final analysis, as we know, the aim of education of universities and colleges is to cultivate the elites in future. If we always keep this mind in heart, we will be circumspect about whether faculty are aloud to work outsider or not. If the students are ignored, they will suffer. If they suffer, the future suffer.

There have been a lot of arguments about how to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level. While some people concede that all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach, according to my conservation, I think this must be determined by case-by-case basis. What's more, there are also some other elements which are indispensable in improving the quality of teaching.


In the first place, let's discuss some principles whose qualities have little connections with the faculty's working outside the academic world. Some academics, such as physics and chemistry, emphasize on imparting basic knowledge and natural theories to students. In order to improve the instruction quality of these subjects and inspire the students' interest in them, teachers should pay more attention to laboratory experiments and teaching methods instead of working in the society. In these realms, spending time working outside the academic is a waste of time. Let's take an example to illustrate this point. Can a physician whose research field is high energy particle physics find something that can improve his research and teaching by doing some work outside his academic? Absolutely no. Because there is no connections between the two, or in a more simply exploration, the physician have no opportunities to take in touch with the small particles on the atomic level, not to mention the high energy particles which are much smaller. From this point of view, it is not necessary to work outside the academic world for some realms' faculty.
When it comes to some other principles such as engineering which pay attention to not only imparting the basic knowledge to students but also the practical skills, it is necessary for the faculty to work outside the academic world. By doing so, on the one hand, it is good for the faculty in the following two respects. First, this will provide the faculty with something new that are not contained in the content of books. Second, they can find some new subjects for their researches during the process of this kind of working. On the other hand, it is useful for students to get some up-to-date information about the society's needs of their future career from the teacher who are keeping in touch with the development of these careers all the time through part-time working. Then, students can be better equipped and be more competitive than those who only focus on the basic knowledge. In short, working outside the academic world is needed for these academics.


What's more, there are also some principles that connect with this kind of working all the time. Art is an apt example to illustrate this point. Because the creation of works of arts can not distract from our ordinary life, it is impossible for artists to creative works based on their own imaginations. Just as it is ridiculous that a photographer can take a photo that reflect the situation of the society without coming out of his house. So there are some disciplines in college or university that must oblige the faculty to work outside the academic world in professionals relevant to the courses they teach.


In addition, there are also some other elements that are indispensable for improving the quality of instruction such as the quality of the students, the quality of the faculty and the facilities and the spirits of the college or university. They interact with each other so that the quality of instruction at college and university can be improved on the whole level. Therefore these elements should not be ignored while emphasize on the working outside the academic world.


To sum up, whether the faculty should work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach or not depends on the concrete situations. What's more, while putting emphasis on this point, attentions to other important elements should not be overlooked.

The speaker asserts that the core means to improve the quality of education in the university is for the teacher to step into the relevant domain of his subject. I strongly propose this point from the following three aspects. However, it seems to decrease to quality of instruction when teacher should too a great deal of time to focus on the education. Thus, that how much time the faculty would spend on their instructions might be a dilemma.

In the education field, whether the quality of instruction is high or low has depended on the students’ employment rate in the personnel market. So the approach to improve the teaching quality is to raise the employment rate. Thus it is essential for the faculty to work in the corporation based on their research area. On the one hand, it is the experiences which teachers summarize from the daily working that would make a positive influence on the students’ thoughts of study and something wrong which has ever taken place during the teacher’s career. The more experiences students could be used for reference, the less rugged the road of their working would be. Since these experiences have been accumulated when one made a mistake which should lead him to be a disadvantageous condition, and might make him suffer a numerous losses. Thus aiming at off the hook, one should take action to solve the problems; these methods used successfully have become the valuable treasury. So for the students, these treasuries would help them to avoid the burden and then to establish an appropriate long-term programme for his future job and ultimately to build wealth. In some American universities, almost all the faculty have a secondary occupation in the relative corporation, it is not only to take an extra incomes, but also to work enough time to gather experiences for their students. Teacher’s thoughts have always made a difference to the students’ thoughts so that teacher’s experience would make a difference.


On the other hand, the world has been changing more and more frequently, some knowledge in the book is exactly authentic would become a false conclusion. Thus necessarily through working in the market, teachers could contact the front edge of the science and the technology for the development of the science is promoted by the needs of the customer, it is the progress of satisfying the needs. And the newest information should be discovered for the market. Thus for the purpose of research the front leading edge and lessening the errors in the teaching materials, changing with the pace of the market is the appropriate way.


However, teacher might not have enough energy for their education mission, when they have distributed too many time for their working projects to accomplish the teaching schedule in a high quality. Since when one has stepped into the workplace which is filled with competition and pressures, unless one should complete the project based on the requirement of the supervisor in time, one would be fired, and the loss of job would be a tremendous shock. So sometimes the professor might choose the reducing teaching time to avoid this dangerous situation.



To sum, whether the professor has distributed the time for teaching reasonably or not would make a significant influence on the quality of instruction. The more appropriate the schedule would be, the better the quality could be. In a proper method, students could make most use of the professors’ experiences; ultimately, when graduating from university, one would adapt the pace of working more quickly.

I agree(这个地方再加一个表示让步之类的词,我感觉可能会好一些Etcadmittedly而且这个不是作者的观点,因此我觉得可能用agree 可能不是太好,propose 怎么样呢?) that academic is important for faculty, because it is what they teach and study. When they do the research they can find some new exampleexamples which are useful to illustrate the theory. And when they do research,(两个从句重复了,后者不用要了,直接把they will。。。。与前面的 They can….并列就好了) they will get deeper comprehending of the theory, they can obtain more details about the course they teach. Thus I do not deny that working in the academic world is necessary for all faculty.
这一段你想表达的是学术研究对于大学教师的重要性,但我总觉得为了和题目呼应,是不是应该说成: Necessarily through spending numerous time on doing academic research, could the quality of teaching be promoted.这样写的话就和题目中的 spend Time对应了。


However, faculty cannot only work in academic world. There are three reasons.


To begin with, faculty can rich their experience when they work outside the academic world. As a consequence, they will give a more vivid class to students. In contrary, teacher will give a boring class if they only teach the theory in the book. I think most people have experienced such a class that the teacher writes formula over the whole time in the class, which everyone feels boring. If students feel boring, they will be apt to lose their attention, and they will not obtain the knowledge as much as the teacher gives. Thus experiencing some affairs outside the academic world will make faculty give more vivid class.

In addition, faculty's knowledge will become diverse, if they spend time in working outside the academic world. In the academic field, faculty always do research, read papers, which is only one kind of knowledge students need to master. Yet in the social field or some other field, there is also much useful knowledge. For example, students of mechanical engineering, they should study the mechanic or material science. But it is not adequate for the students who want to work in the companies. They also need to know how to save money when they design the machine, which is very important for industry because the basic principle of enterprise is earning money. Therefore, teacher need to give this kind of information such as how to work in the enterprise, which is necessary for the future of students, namely they should

Finally, the information teacher give in the class will become diverse after they spend time in the field outside the academic world, which is benefit to students’ eyereach. It is especially important for the undergraduate, who have very little about the course they study. As a consequence, the information their teachers give will show a general view about course if faculty spend time in working outside the academic world. Students will grow from students knowing nothing about their future to students who have a general plan for their future. Such as students of electronically engineering, they have different kinds of future. They can work as a faculty or work in the enterprise. But they did not have any information when they just come to college or university. And if teacher work outside, they will give much useful information to students, which is very helpful to students. Hence, requiring faculty work outside is benefit to students’ future.

我感觉这一段和前一段讲的就是一个意思,即,老师的工作经历能够为学生以后的职场生活提供一个全局的认识,也就是说,老师的经历能够为学生进行职场的规划。前一段你更多的写的是学科之间的渗透,因此我觉得把两段合起来以后,这一段就应该写教师的职场经历可以为学生进行职场前的职业规划。


In general, if faculty spend time outside the academic world, the class will become more interesting, they will give students more comprehensive knowledge, and more information about their major. Thus it is necessary to spend time in working outside the academic world.

There are several factors include teachers, students, and auxiliary materials such as teaching content etc, all may influence the quality of instruction at the college and university level. Just reinforce one of them would not improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level indeed.
Admittedly, just as the author asserts, requiring all faculty to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach is beneficial for improving the quality of instruction and university level. However, it is not enough just doing this. As teachers, their duty is to educate students as well as impart knowledge. Thus, having active morale and high ethic level is as the same importance as broad knowledge. They as basic quality are essential to the teachers. A good teacher will exert subtle influence on students. And quality of teachers is the most important aspect of improving the quality of instruction at the college and university level. For example, what else may be said, most people would agree that the universities having teachers win Nobel Prize is better than those have not.
Auxiliary materials such as teaching content are also important for improving the quality of instruction at the college and university level. As we know, students are the main body of university, and the university students are not similar to junior students or senior students, they have higher requirement for knowledge. Hence, such as what faculty teaches is dated or frontier of knowledge and they have profound analysis in their profession or just for impart superficially all have direct influence on students’ satisfaction. And so teaching content and materials can not keep up with the development of science and technology, no matter how faculties teaches vividly, no matter how much time they spend on working outside the academic world in profession relevant to the courses they teach, the quality of instruction would not be improved, not to mention university level.
Of course, students as recipients have some influence on the quality of instruction at the college and university level. We all know that no matter what the teachers impart vividly, no matter how the quality of teachers is, if the students do not accept actively, or approve them, the university would not improve the quality of instruction and its level.
Overall, all faculties as one important factor to improve the quality of instruction and university level are not only specialist but generalist, just as the author asserts that they should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. But other factors mentioned above should not be neglected. Only every aspect is developed in all-round way, the quality of instruction and university level is improved really.
