45."Government officials should rely on their own judgment rather than unquestioningly carrying out the will of the people whom they serve."
Admittedly, democracy is a guarantee of every people’s happy life. But we must realize that only government can see a large picture of nation development in a long run. In a sense, government officials should rely on their own judgment rather than “unquestioningly” carrying out the people’s will. Of course, on the other hand any government which is blind to the will of the people whom they serve may pay a heavy price.
Before we discuss whether the government should rely on their own judgment absolutely, it is necessary for us to make out what the term-“country” or “government”-means. In geography, this term is geographical region and often applied to a political division or the territory of a sovereign state. While in sociological meaning, this term is concern with the will of a nation’s people. In other words, “country” (as well as the same meaning of “government” here) is a unit of all the citizens’ will. So the government of a country is endowed the power to pursue long-term interest for its people and by its people. So sometimes, it is inevitable that government officials ought to make some decisions without carrying out will of the people on the surface, but with the confidence given by the people in fact. For instance, when the government official, the U.S. Secretary of State, William H. Seward negotiated the Alaska purchase with the Russians in 1867 for $7.2 millions, he is almost criticized by every senator even every people in his country. But see from today’s point, this purchase is obviously advisable and Seward may have a chance to become a super hero. Similarly, with the construction of the subway in my hometown last year, the local government would require the reconstruction or even deconstruction of existing home and buildings in the path of the tunnel. In such event, individual citizens are forced to move out of their homes or suffer inconvenience in transportation and pollution. But it is common sense to us that these sacrifices caused by the demand of local government officials are deniably necessary and based on a more profitable future for many more residents whom the government officials taken into account more. Simply put, the government officials must consider and balance many factors and the future rather than the trivial benefit which individual and common people care about. Consequently, compared with different people is representative of his own interest, the government must try to take everyone’s interest as a whole into consideration, which inevitably lead to the judgment it makes only relying on itself.
But how the government takes everyone’s interest into consideration? The most important approach is government officials cannot forget to keep in mind that they must care about what the people think and what the people need while they rely on their own judgment. Such as making a poll is possible, which is proper to be regarded as a reference rather than a decisive factor. But when it comes to the question concerning with day-to-day life of citizens, the government had better carrying out the will of the people whom it servers unconditionally and “unquestioningly”. Since in this situation, temporary interest is the best and largest interest.
All in all, no matter whether government officials ignore the will of people at the surface or carry out the will of people. Actually, all rivers run into the sea. Namely, whether carrying out the will of people “unquestioningly” or not just depends on different situations and different questions, which I think is the real meaning of democracy.
