Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."

The purpose of education in school is to teach students how to learn by themselves outside the school or how to deal with problems after they graduate. From my point of view, students don't have to memorize facts only after they carefully studied all concepts. This way may be useful in school, but not so much in the real world.

To begin with I have to clarify that the ideas, trends and concepts are equally important as the facts. Only learned the facts seems superficial. If Carter only satisfied with knowing that steam which comes from boiling water can push
the lid of a pot but had no interest of knowing how and why it could do that, the industrial revolution would be pushed back for a long while.

However, in the information explosion nowadays, millions of new information, new ideas, new facts are coming from Internet, work and other people everyday. If we have to fully understand every details of every facts, I am afraid that there is no time and no enough human resources to accomplish that huge amount of works. And it will result in fruitless eventually. However consider that just knowing the facts and how to fully efficiently utilize those facts, we may create a variety of new things in a comparably short time. For instance, what inside of an atom remains a secret even untill now, but people have found a way of how to use the atom's power, knowing as nuclear power in the World War II. In that time, no people actually how the atoms actually work to create that tremendous power clearly, but they did utilize the nuclear power to accomplish a series of killing jobs. If one country's scientists had to studied the ideas, trends and concepts in it, maybe other counrtry's scientists would invent the nuclear bomb sooner than them, and they would be ill-treated during the war. In sum, when it is no time to fully understand one fact, it is absolutely fine to use it first. So it is not necessary to memorize or use that fact only after studied it thoroughly.

In addition, not only in the modern world but also in the ancient time, it is just optional or even unreasonable to fully understand the ideas, trends and concepts of every single fact. In the ancient time, when people learned how to utilize fire, no one could actually pointed out how it worked, they even considered that it was a kind of god's mysterious magnificant work and even worshiped it. And a similar incident also happened in rural countryside that women with low eduacated level still can perform well in her whole life although she doesn't know any science theory.

So in conclusion, the sequence of memorizing a fact does not have to studied the ideas, trends and concepts first. Sometimes "just do it" is useful and productive.
