题目: The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
“During her seventeen years as professor pf botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas’s demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college. ”

According to the arguments, the arguer recommends Professor Thomas getting more $10,000 salaries each year and being Department Chairperson because of the following reasons. First, the classes of Professor Thomas are largest at the university. Secondly, Professor Thomas brought large money into the research grants for the university, which exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Fear of brain drain, the arguer makes the conclusion that Elm City University should raise the professor’s salary and promote the professor as Department Chairperson. A careful examination of this argument would reveal how groundless the conclusion is.

In the first place, arguer considers that Professor Thomas is popular among students because of her classes are among the largest at the university. The arguer does not provide enough evidences of the relationship between the number of students and the popularity. There are many factors which can affect the students to choose a curriculum. For example, it happens that most of students are interest in learning botany. Or it may be possible that completing this course can be great help to find a good job. It means that the popularity does not vary directly with the number of students. We can tell that the arguer is too hasty to make a conclusion.

Furthermore, the arguer fails to prove that the causation relationship between the researching ability and money which were brought by Professor Thomas. The arguer says that Professor Thomas brought a lot of money, exceeded her salary in each last two years, for university. So that Professor Thomas should be promoted as Department Chairperson because of her ability in research. However, we can find that Professor Thomas brought much money in research grants does not mean that she has outstanding ability in research area for sure. The arguer also can not prove that Professor Thomas has the excellent leadership which can lead the team of research.

Finally, the arguer concludes that if they do not raise the salary of Professor Thomas and promote her. She might leave Elm City University for other college. This conclusion seems so weak and lacks persuasion. Raising salary and promotion should be according to the ability and contribution. However, the arguer fails to give us enough evidences that Professor Thomas worth raising money and promotion. If the recommendation without fair and transparent, I am afraid that there will be more professor leave Elm City University to other colleges.

In sum, if the arguer wants to recommend Professor Thomas to be Department Chairperson and raise her salary, she/he should prove enough evidences to convince other people.
