While some people emphasize great importance of keeping up with times, others argue that the significance of learning the past in problem solving should not be rejected or neglected. To examine whether it is necessary to deal with difficulties and make decisions, we have to look carefully into further details.

There are circumstances where the history can help us understand and appreciate the mores and values which could prevent the repeating mistakes. Based on these values and ideals, people can determine how to manage those problems similar with the past. As the President Abraham Lincoln said:” We know nothing of what will happen in future, but by the analogy of past experience.” Here is an example.
After the western developed countries experienced economic crisises many times, they studied these events and analyse the reasons. According to learn from the past, the cycle of the economic crisis is longer and longer. So understanding past successes and failures enable people to confront their challenges more advisably to some extent. At this point, it is necessary to learn the past.

On the other hand, there also are inverse conditions. Just because the world is changing all the time and the differences between individuals are tremendous, the past answers are totally inadequate for our current and future questions.. In the past, the medical science is not developed, people could just deal with diseases according to their experience. But now it is not necessary to use those old methods because the medical science can easily help patients recover in many diseases. The point worth mentioneing is that if the past experience is not scientific or even wrong, you can imagine what the results will be if we formulaically abide by the past solutions. What is more, if we always copy the history without thinking and creating, maybe the human beings’ civilization would stop. All of the above tells us learning the history in a wrong way is deleterious.

In conclusion, we need to have our own judgement when to understand the past is necessary and how to learn.
