59"Too much emphasis is placed on role models. Instead of copying others, people should learn to think and act independently and thus make the choices that are best for them."
I cannot agree more with the speaker insofar as individuals should contemplate, behave independently and search for what fit themselves. Yet, my contention lies with role models--imitation and independence, in fact, do not reject, dismiss but embrace with each other during our daily lives. Models and paragons are necessary to be set. From we start to learn speaking, walking, to every skills need to be mastered, family, teachers, the known and unknown have become role models to imitate, mimic . We gradually take morality, esthetics and other social standards as our own. Without acquiring founded knowledge and experience, it is just a fantasy to pick up instantly what were created, tested, improved by the endeavors of numerable generations. Those great men and women, important issues in history are shining beacons to direct us , lead us to be mutual psychologically. As we grow up, those who are superior to us are taken as new paragons to follow. This is how life goes. If role models always exist to follow and learn from, why should we challenge them skeptically and work in our own way? The answer lays upon the core of growing up -- study to thinking. The only method to keep step with the era is to continuously learn, criticize, pick up the elites, discard the weak, then this process goes periodically. On the contrary, those who just copy from authorities without analysis personally will lag behind and be forgotten by history, because they scarcely make contribution to society successfully. On one hand, although methods, even huge success appeared perfectly before, copying the same case may not ensure a similar result due to the variance of time, opportunity, situation, and purpose. On the other sides, established authorities and rules, more often than not, are obstacles and confines for creativity and inspiration. If forerunners never disproved empiricism and broke no new ground, we still be innocent and live under the control of religion. Another example aptly illustrate is art. just changing a special perspective from historical version such as sink of Titanic, to fairytale with mermaid,
to legend about vampire, family, friendship, love will become eternal topic for movies.
Everyone is special with different versions and talents, thus the world is diverse and vivid. In conclusion, former knowledge and experience are step stones for us and provide us insight to deep into how the society and nature functions. Only through comparing versions of our own and before, can we study how to think and construct personal career. |
