ARGUMENT7 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."

In this letter, the editor recommends residents of Clearview to vote for Ann Green rather than Frank Braun. To make his recommendation convinced, he compares two candidates and their organizations they respectively belong to. However, close scructiny of these evidencs reveals that it lends little credible support to the author’s assertion..

Firstly, it's obvious that the author fails to take other factors into consideration when electing a good mayor except his attitudes towards environment. To manage a good government, mayors have to maintain rapid development of the cities in economy, social security as well as environmental protection. Thus, it is unfair to put one-sided stress on the environmental protection while other aspects are overlooked. Though Ann Green may take good measures to deal with environmental troubles, I doubt whether he is qualified in the administration of economy and social security. So I disagee with the writer's opinion that enviroment awareness is the only or the most important element.

Even if I concede that we should vote for mayors who regard actions on environmental protection as essential, the author unfairly classified the two persons by what organizations they belong to, without introducing to the citizens more details about the political programs of the two candidates. It's likely that though Frank Braun is a member of the Clearview town council, he holds the environment-friendly opinions as well. On the other hand, we also should correctly evaluate the reports of Ann Green to see whether his policies to be carried out in future is practical. Thus, to make a correct choice, we should know more information about their political programs.

Besides, the writer unsubstantially assumes that the Clearview town council will continue their previous policies. As the realization of bad results of the past and growing environment-friendly consciense, the members of the Clearview town council probably change their old opinions and will devote more money and time to the environmental cause. Without ruling out such possibilities, the writer can't assure me of electiong Ann Green.

In sum, the supports to the author's claim is not strong and objective enough. To bolster his recommedation, he should introduce Ann Green to the readers in all aspects as well as his advantages when concering environment troubles. And I will dig deep into their political programs to better evaluate the two candidates.
Silent day, day by day...
