“Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.”
无论学生学习什么都应该带着一定的疑问。学生们应该质疑老师教授的东西而不只是被动的接受。
There is the long-time existence of the two elements that affect the progress of education----the spirit of skepticism and the attitude to accept whatever is taught by the teacher. The assertion that learners should bring a certain skepticism to what they study instead of accepting it passively comes to my basic agreement. Others, however, too much suspicion can do harm to some areas in the society, so that to some extent we should avoid insisting it.
Firstly, skepticism helps us uncover prejudice and resort to a thorough investment which may probably give a better understanding of truth hidden behind it and contribute for the progress of history . To suspect authority is a brave challenge which actually must be paid a lot by the thinker, for he shakes the radical spirit that the celebrities believe in for a long time. Consider, Bruno was condemned to the stake due to the faith that the Heliocentric system which was founded by Copernicus and the theory is the opposition of the Geocentric theory which was admired by Christian. Not deny the discovery of the Heliocentric system is absolutely the impulse of the society and at the same time benefits we human beings a lot.
Secondly, the increasing of critic thinkers makes the process of learning more efficiently and effectively during the participating of the students. Durant, an American historian, has ever said, as I paraphrased “Education is a progressive discovery of our ignorance.” More questions means more findings about unknown things, and in the phase of studying the suspicion let the knowledge absorbed easier and deeper. Think about the proceeding to solve a math problem, as a consideration, we setback to question when we finish it, why we take this method not others, will it work if we choose another, and in the changeable condition the same way can be useful? This effective way helps us draw inferences about other cases from one instance, and makes the students to obtain more knowledge in a short time.
However, the exceeding of skepticism should be forbidden ,because the bad influences it causes is greater than the good ones. Some of the criticism has no significance, so that it waste the learners a massive of time and energy. In many cases, the more we think, the more complex we lead to the matter which is simple on earth. Take the math example still, we cannot deny the algotithm when we calculate the numbers. The history is created by our ancestors step by step, and the technology progress we achieve today is also on the basis of the premier, so we should recognize the contribution they made, not deny all of them.
In sum, the spirit of skepticism is the valuable deposits the good learners have. It results in the important discoveries and the progress of the society. In other words, we must not suspect anything unreasonable, which can be counterproductive in some cases.
