TOPIC: ARGUMENT200 - Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

Grounding on the statistics which collected from dentists, combining with some presumptions the speaker makes the assumption that men would suffer more than women during dental treatment, and come out an advice to the dentists who try to attract patients through advertisements. However, the statistics maybe have some problems and the assumption seems somewhat weak of cogent.
The dentist claimed that three times more males than females faint while visiting them. It is just a summary of data, the number of both men and women were not provided, perhaps the male patients went to dental clinics are much more than female patients, in this case, maybe all patients would faint when they were in that atmosphere despite of their genders. Thus, three times more is acceptable.
Given that the statistics could actually reflect the condition that men are more likely faint when visiting the dentists, we could not hastily draw the conclusion that males would probably distressed much more than females. Generally, we know that the dental treatment machine would make a weird noise when it works on teeth; imaginably, men would be just physiologically incapable of enduring this agony noise and may leads to faint. Besides, men would always regard themselves as the representation of strong and health, when they suffer with such kind of ailment, they would be disconcerted, and thus perhaps that it was the psychological factor that contributes to faint.
Although the conclusion that men would distress maybe logical, the conclusion that dentists who want to attract patients should focus on men still remain questionable. To guarantee the statistics be reasonable, the number of men and women patients should almost the same; merely target the male consumer, the patients maybe thought that the clinic is just for male, so they would lost a large amount of female patients. Furthermore, although the patients may fear of suffering, commonly, when people tale sick, the preferred doctor should be able to cure them with high quality, for this reason merely some methods of release distress may not work as well as prospected.
In order to attract more patients, the dentists should make sure that their treatment quality should be superior, based on this they can come out certain methods to release the suffering of patients, in this way, the former patients may recommends the dentist to their friend who with the same problems. Thereby improve the reputation of dentists and increase profits as well. |
