A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person—often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed—and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.
In the article, the author makes a recommendation that anyone who snores should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more. To justify this conclusion, the author notes that people who snore are more likely to gain weight and many have the condition called sleep apnea, that is, stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, which makes them too tired to exercise during the day. The argument seems to be well-presented but still far from satisfactorily reasoned.
A threshold problem involved in this article is the author’s unfairly assumption that sleep apnea makes people who snore really tired during the day and thus lead to other problems such as lack of exercise. First, no accurate information is provided in this argument to make us know the percentage of people who snore and meanwhile have this sleep apnea called condition in the total numbers of ones having snore problem. In other words, the vague data ‘many people’ cited is far from convincing. Consequently, it is really hard to tell whether sleep apnea is a general problem shared among all the ones who snores. In addition, without any scientific evidence, it is problematic to draw the conclusion that sleep apnea would contribute to a poor quality of sleep and make people feel really tired during the day. Given that this frequently breathing stop is too short to be noticed, it is entirely possible that it would also have no impact on the quality of sleeps.
What’s more, assuming that most people who snore have the condition called sleep apnea which contribute to the tired feeling during the day, it is still unreasonable to conclude that such kind of people do not exercise and this make them more likely to gain weight, based on no related studies or surveys. It is entirely possible that these people can get an additional sleep in the noon so that they still have sufficient energy to exercise. Moreover, aside from lack of exercising there are many alternative factors which could contribute to the fatness such the genetic problem, the age, the types of jobs people take and so on.
Last but not the least, even if the lack of exercise caused by the tired feelings is the truly reason why people who snore are more likely to gain weight, the author cannot make his recommendation that anyone who snores should eat less reasonable. Perhaps, such tire feelings caused by sleep apnea can also lead to a terrible appetite during the day, for that matter, people having such problem might already eat less than the average people so taking this suggestion would be even harmful to the health. To make a sound recommendation which would really benefit people’s life, the author ought to find out the true cause of the fatness among people who snore.
In sum, the article seems to be well-presented but actually far from reasonable with such insufficient and convincing evidence. To bolster his recommendation, the author must provide clear evidence and find out the real reason why people who snore are more likely to gain weight. |
