TOPIC: ISSUE99 - "In any realm of life-whether academic, social, business, or political-the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options."

I strongly agree with the speaker’s assertion that holding a practical point of view is a way accessing to success in almost every realm of our life. Whereas, it is too hastily to conclude that taking the practical view is the only method, in which my contention lays with. My point of view is discussed as follows.
Firstly, I concede that a practical view is indisputable a necessary condition when looking for the key to success. After all, only through a practical way can we know the fact, solve the immediate problem and satisfy the public. In contrast, always being addicted to our own illusion would result in a misunderstanding to the fact, and incapable to make the correct choice, thus lead to a awkward situation. For example, Ludwig II, the king of Bavaria in mid-nineteenth century, disliked the large public functions and avoided social event whenever possible, and preferred a life of fantasy that he pursued with various idealistic and creative projects. His most famous work is the new swanstone castle, a dreaming Romanesque fortress with soaring fairy-tale towers. His idiosyncrasies led to the tension with king’s governmental ministers. Finally, he was deposed of mental illness without medical examination. Admittedly, the mad king was praised for his talent in art, other than the politic. Yet, his idealistic attitude toward work and life lead to fail in career and endless ridicule.
Although in almost every realm of our life, taking a practical view of the world is a good choice for the sake of achieving success, we can not negate the idealism means a lot as well. To some extent, when errors are too little to be taken into account, it is feasible to solve problems in a view of idealism, even more convenient. For example, in high physics class, we were always required to solve problems under certain condition---assuming an idealistic condition such as vacuum. Admittedly, there are bias exists in the final answer of these questions. Yet, only in this way could we solve the problem because we are incapable to get the precise data in the real condition. It turns out that the answers can be accepted by the public and this is the way various disciplines develop. In other words, to some extent, the difference between the idealism and pragmatism is acceptable, and holding an idealistic view toward problems is a shortcut to the key. Nevertheless, compared to the practical, the idealistic one is used less often.
All in all, considering about the development of the whole society, the living conditions of the public, pragmatism is much more important than idealism. Through practice and modification can we get close to success. |
