The true value of a civilization is reflected in its artistic creations rather than in its scientific accomplishments.

From primitive agriculture to modern urbanization, from ancient Greek mythology to behavior art, the human civilization has undergone a dramatic progress that is contributed by both science and art. The true value of a civilization, which cannot be better defined as the whole development of human society, is the result of combination of artistic creations and scientific accomplishments, no single one can reflect.

Art works are of great significance to reflect human imagination and beautify our lives in a myriad ways of creating. Since Prometheus stole fire from heaven and gave it to humankind, helping human finish civilization, the Greece philosophy held a profound value for the world. It is through the eyes of artists that we can see the version beyond our time and transcends the limited circle we live in. For example, the early writers depicted an ideal world called Utopia, where the economy, politics, culture all highly developed, and people enjoyed the advantages brought by highly civilization. Art does not only create a more meaningful and beautiful tomorrow of a civilization but it also pursues the beauty of human lives. Paintings are imaginative with colors, music inspires the passion and smooth the sadness, poetry conveys the true emotions of people. All these are undoubtedly to enrich our emotions, aesthetics and ethics. Without art, the world will be less colorful and more mechanical. The reflection of a civilization true value will be more obscure.

However, if it is said that art reflects a beautiful virtual picture of a civilization, it is science that makes the fantasy into reality. Not a single person could make achievement only by accounting on assumption and imagination, let alone the progress of a whole society. With the development of scientific theories and methodologies, human beings could analyze the world rationally and logically. When we find something unusual, we may analyze it by doing experiments but not accept nor abandon it randomly. Science has made great change in the way of thinking. In addition, the innovative sciences have been changing the way we live strikingly as well as the process of civilization. Without tools progress, we may still stay in the primitive agricultural society and live in tribes; with absence of electricity, the world is probably dark; lack of automobiles, it may take a month from a city to another nearby. The civilization of our society would be delayed long if science hasn’t moved forward.

Finally, concerning the mutually affects of art and science on civilization, one could not neglect the interplays of the two. Art needs the scientific techniques to improve and develop, such as modern paintings based on computer technology, photography from digital cameras and so forth. By contrast, science may not advance without the inspiration from art.

In conclusion, what makes a civilization meaningful and why a civilization exists lies in the promotion on humankind, which are the cooperative interactions of art and science. Art explains how the civilization advances while science provides the resolutions.
