TOPIC: ISSUE235 - "Most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue. But loyalty-whether to one's friends, to one's school or place of employment, or to any institution-is all too often a destructive rather than a positive force."
Loyalty, as a virtue, which means faith, obedience, and devotion, is the base of a society and needs to be handed down from generation to another. Although during history or even today there are many destructive events pushed forward by blind and overdue loyalty, we should positively recognize that mostly it is loyalty that makes teams integrated and thus society prosperous.
Admittedly, utilized by those who hold unjust purposes, blind and overdue loyalty sometimes causes devastating results. In the Second World War, Japanese people answered the call of militarists to launch the aggression to other nations, in the name of loyalty to Mikado, but brought about tragedies to Asian countries. If not for the faith and obedience to Mikado and the country, why did the Japanese soldiers devote their lives to the war? But what we should understand is that loyalty itself is harmless, thus blameless; while a blind or overdue one is the key of the problem, which always become a tool to control the righteous by others. Therefore, what we should do is educate people to harbor rational loyalty rather than give it up in haste.
In most cases, however, loyalty acts as a positive force reinforcing the mutual credits and communication that make people enjoying a happier life and groups working more efficiently.
Firstly, people with loyalty to friends, organization they work for, and the nation will have a life with goal, harmonious environment, thus happiness and fruitful. For one thing, they have a relatively pure mind realizing their value for their friends and the group to make achievement. With loyalty, they trust others, understand the situations the group meet and are willing to devote all their time and energy to the work; they won't be distracted by other lure that makes them confused with their aims. For another, loyal people can probably enjoy a more relaxed environment in their life. Since they are always genuine and credible to others, they will be entangled with fewer imbroglios in personal relations, suffering less annoyance, and living a simple life that is good for their health and work. The head of our institute, professor Huang, is a good example. After having finished study in Clemson University, he came home and started his research in the field of microwave chemistry. He loves his work, we students as well as our college very much, spending part of time on the fundamental courses for freshmen despise (despite) of busy research work. He trusts his partners in the group and other faculty, willing to share progress with others. Meanwhile, he is also admired by subordinates and students. Only with an age of 40s, professor Huang has become Changjiang Scholar for his great contribution to the field.
Furthermore, loyalty prompts teamwork in a group, upon which much more emphasis is placed nowadays. As the development of the society with a trend of globalization, individuals can hardly achieve progress without help from partners; groups also need members strugglling together towards the mutual goal. Thanks to loyalty of everyone, cohesive power will be injected into the group, without which, things would be followed by suspect, jealousy, or even hostility that are fatal to the team. Successful world are filled with such ensamples. Haier Corporation, one of the biggest household electrical appliance manufacturers, was once a factory facing bankrupt in 1980s. How could it survive and thrive? As David Parks, the director of the branch factory in South Carolina established in 1999, once said to journalist, everyone here is genuine and endeavor with the same purpose of development. Unlike other American workers, always shift jobs every three or five years, local workers in Haier are willing to work here forever. It is thus clearly that loyalty plays an important part in the development of this increasingly global corporation.
In general, though blind and overdue loyalty will become a devastating force in certain circumstances, we are supposed to recognize that rational one is of great significance for the growth of both individuals and groups. Thereby, loyalty should be inherited as a treasure o f virtue.
