130"How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
It is generally acknowledged that children are the tomorrow of our society, and therefore, how to raise a child in a socialized way is crucial. However, there are so many factors that determine the destiny of society that how children are raised is just a relatively important one. And in my opinion, we did do many to raise children who can bring about a better society.
We have to admit that the socialization of our children will help them learn more about how to use practical technology and gain more knowledge on how to use them. However, comparing with the characteristic and ethic that a child bear, socialization is not that much significant in determining the society’s destiny. Socialization can simply teach children how to use a knife, but ethic will give them information weather they should use it as a surgeon or a murder. Socialization inoculate children with some certain practical knowledge which will help them to find a job as a worker, but one’s true characteristic will lead them to a higher position that can serve the society better as a leader. In her commencement at Harvard, the renowned novelist J.K Rowling told the graduates that what really important is not the skill, the application and the CA, but imagination and the courage to deal with failure.
As for the second proposition, the author said we have not yet learned how to raise children who can bring about a better society. I can not agree. If a better society can be characterized as increasing income and developing technology, we have already done a good job in raising our children. In middle school, high school and university, we learn how to read books and how to experiment. These educational institutions are exactly the places where we learn knowledge with which we can serve the society in the future, and the competition mechanism in them greatly enhances the learning, forcing each individual to work hard. Even at home, we are taught by our parents that we should learn more and read more. Sometimes we may not regard promoting a better society as a goal, but when we gained enough knowledge and began serving the general public, we do bring about a better society unconsciously. A typical plumber, for instance, got trained at a plumber school, and received a plumber license after graduation. During his plumbing work, he may consider earning more money as his ambition when he already helped other people. Although there are problems, the public do well in raising children who can bring about a better society.
To sum up, how children are socialized is not the only factor that determines the destiny of our society. And we have not only learned but also did a good job in raising children in a way that will benefit the society.
