ISSUE131 - "The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."

When talk about the function and effect of arts, here comes an assertion that the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. I fundamentally agree with the speaker to some extent. However, oftentimes, arts also serve as the representative of the mainstream, which is readily to be seen in the society. In addition, there are other kinds of forms that reveal the hidden features of a society either.

The cases that can aptly exemplified the fact that the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses are common. Like in painting, caricatures, as a channel to present the world in an ironic way, usually appear in the newspapers and magazines. The plays or dramas, which were created to present the sorrow of the wars, the dissatisfaction of life condition, equally become the state for the public to present their hidden feeling, in that to present the dissatisfaction is not allowed at that time.What is more, the diverse literature works in certain period, such as national revolution or worldwide war, are regarded as the indicator of the public's mind. Clearly, in many cases, especially when people do not satisfied with the present government or lives, such kind of arts reveal people's ideas and willing in this special means.


Admittedly, hidden ideas and impulses are the themes of arts. Nevertheless, the mainstream of a society is usually revealed by arts through many different ways. One of the most popular music among the young generation must be the R&B, and young pioneers seldom conceal that such kind of songs are their favorite. As the increasing fashion of the music, the ideas and impulses that are inspired by the songs are become common and obvious. It is hardly to say that, in this time, what does the arts reveal is still the hidden minds.

In our society, not only several kinds of arts, but also many other forms can be thought as the presentation of otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society, no matter they are positive or negative. On the one hand, some violent conflicts and parades are one of the common ways of the public to present their hidden thoughts, which will not easily appear. Perhaps it is because of people's dissatisfaction about the current government or some unfair policies. No matter what are they opposed of, it is no exaggeration to say that such activities are the relatively direct ways to present their hidden minds. On the other hands, of course, the love that is deeply in people's heart will also be revealed in particular times. We need look no further than the case of the earthquake in China. The international rescue teams, the soldiers, as well as the public officials, made their effort to save lives, which shows the hidden impulses involving love and help. The above and other alternative forms, directly or indirectly, describe the hidden thoughts of the society.

In sum, it is undeniable that the arts are the indisputable part in revealing the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Meanwhile, it is another fact should not be ignored that arts are the representation of the obvious character of the society either. Additionally, several certain forms of human behaviors also become the way for the public to present their otherwise hidden ideas and impulses.
