TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
提纲:
1.
高校外工作能带来好处,提高教学质量

但是,有些工作除了在高校内教书或者做研究,没有其他工作

即使是有工作岗位,也不能要求教师全体参与。教师工作可能会分心,教学质量可能得不到提高。而且校外工作带来的好处可以有其它途径取得。

With working experiences relevant to one's certain field, a professor probably could promote his/her quality of instruction. But it is not a necessity for requiring all faculties to get involved in workingfor there are many conditions limiting the determination. Whether a teacher at university should have a job outside academic world depends on different majors and fields they are in and each faculty’s own teaching condition.

Admittedly, most courses and majors have relevant working positions outside universities, with which could possibly boost the instruction's quality. Spending time working outside academic aura makes professors informed with the most updated knowledge a certain fields, which could be significant to some disciplines such as informational and computer technologic related majors whose knowledge on book lags far behind current already mastered information. And these working faculties could also add fresh and vivid personal experiences in their courses, making them educational, interesting and unforgettable at the same time. For example, a financial professor could provide students with vivid scenes of large sums of stock trading as dealers or brokers in stock companies. Moreover, these faculties could offer students detailed information on the current situation of certain careers, for they are experts in the profession, their insightful career advice embraces more specific guidance with their personal experiences to students which professional career instructors lack. There is no denying that relevant working experiences could bring many benefits to students, boosting the quality of instructions.

However, it still needs case-by-case basis analysis. On one hand, for certain kinds of courses and majors, it is hard to find jobs outside universities, leaving faculties no access to do so. Such majors could be theoretical mathematics concentrating on exploring the complex quantitative mythical hypothesis and constructing the world of mathematical theories, which leads to the narrow application outside academy; and philosophy guiding students a way to think, with no suitable career positions for philosophers to take, excepting from being faculty at universities or writers. People in these fields have few choices except teaching students and doing researches in universities. And the quality of instructions mainly depends on the faculty's own understandings and achievements, an outside academic career could not help much, let along hardly are there working professions.

On the other hand, requiring all rest faculties to work is still too arbitrary. Since spending time working may be distractions from teaching, professors may not have enough time and energy to discuss and communicate with students or even to answer their brief questions, leaving the potential promotion open to doubt. And benefits attributed to profession working could be available by other means such as enroll people with full working experiences in certain field as guest professors to teach students and inviting the successful to give lectures regularly. These methods could also bring about the foregoing benefits and solving the problems state at the same time. Therefore, universities should carefully weigh the potential problems against benefits of professors’ working before making decisions.

To sum up, whether it helps promote instructions by working outside academy depends on different analysis of various occasions. Only when the condition is available for outside working and the benefits outweigh the potential problems, should the university require faculties take part in the working outside academy.
