Issue139: Every new generation needs to redefine right and wrong in its own terms and according to the conditions of its own time.
Does every generation need to redefine ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ according to the conditions of its own time, as the speaker maintains? The generation gap has been an existing problem all along. I agree insofar that new generation needs to redefine the concept of right and wrong in its own term. Otherwise, in my viewpoint, while new definition should be made, the essence and soul of the past necessitate to be remained.
It is due to the condition of its own time that those differences, which are out of date, should be redefined appropriately. For the new definition of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ has a great impact on the new generations and even the whole society, those unsuitable ideas and opinions can be remained but should not be advocated in order to construct the better value system to the young generation. For example, in the middle ages in Europe, the theory that the sun circles the earth is of great popularity and almost everyone seemed it as a truth. However, Heliocentric, a theory by Galileo, redefined the reality; in other words, he redefined what is ‘right’ so that the former theory means the ‘wrong’. Although the religionists could not accept the fact and disregarded it as heresy, the redefinition had largely changed the belief and value system of the contemporaries. To a certain extent, the redefinition contributes to the progress of humans.
However, not all of the redefinition is made in accordance with the society’s own culture. Owing to the redefinition is mainly made by the young generation, who is immature sometimes, the definition they newly made may be somewhat inappropriate to revise the existed culture. Currently, with the growth of global networks, the ‘Internet language’ has been widely used, in which a variety of strange symbols represent one’s different facial expressions. Given that it is funny and easy enough to remember and use these symbols, teenagers have gradually started writing them in homework and compositions and so on. Though it is harmless to use these facial symbols, the gradual replacement in writing should not be advocated in that small symbols, with only the meaning of facial expressions (such as smile, cry, angry…etc) , cannot place language, which is more accurate and profound. The instance illustrates that due to the special means of redefinition, redefinition itself requires to be supervised by seniors.
The essence part of the culture is supposed to be remained in the cases that there are no more suitable concepts and definitions produced. If the culture of a society is redefined easily, then scarcely the cultural essence can be remained. Bogged down in the Sargasso sea of new definition, the society calls for the ability to pick out what is suitable to redefine ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, and what is not.
Simply put, without the soul of a culture, which is based on the past, the traditions cannot be passed from generation to generation. Nevertheless, the redefinition is a sort of gradual progress as well. Thus, it is of great significance that only through the combination of the traditional culture and redefinition of right and wrong can a society go forward. |
