本人第一篇a,水平不高,见谅。3月29机考,诚寻g友的指点,非常感谢!若有互改小组,非常愿意加入!
240.The following appeared in a memo written by a dean at Buckingham
College.

"To serve the housing needs of our students, Buckingham College should
build a new dormitory. Buckingham's enrollment is growing and, based on
current trends, should double over the next fifty years, thus making
existing dormitories inadequate. Moreover, the average rent for an
apartment in our town has increased in recent years. Consequently,
students will find it increasingly difficult to afford off-campus housing.
Finally, an attractive new dormitory would make prospective students more
likely to enroll at Buckingham."

In this argument ,the dean concludes that Buckingham College should build a new dormitory. He commits this generalization by listing several reasons such as Buckingham's growing enrollment, increasing rent of the town and a new dormitory will attract more students.

However, he fails to consider several other relevant factors that might influence the consequent.
We are told Buckingham's enrollment is growing and, based on current trends, should double over the next fifty years in the memo.In fact ,the dean commits a fallcy of hasty generalization by the so-called trends.Maybe last two years are the fastest developing years of
Buckingham College, but the increasing rate of the enrollment is considerable.Neverthe less,it won’t always keeping that trend.Other facts sucn as the reducing population of the high school students, and financial crisis may lead to the reduction of the enrollment.Even if the enrollment increases as the dean predicted, the school’s reform is also a very important factor.Nowadays, more and more people take classes though the internet. If Buckingham put internet classes into practice, then more students could take their classes at home.So the number of the enrollment does not represents the number of the dormitory Buckingham needs.

The dean also points out that the average rent for an apartment in the town has increased in recent years. But he failed to establish the relationship between this and the necessity of building a new dormitory.Maybe the price of the rent is twenty dollars a month before, now it increases to twenty two dollars a month. This does not make a deep influence on those who wants to rent an apartment. And the dean did not tell us where most of the school’s students come from.If most of the students come from the town where Buckingham College locates. Then they can just go home but go to find an apart ment. They do not care how much is the rent.

Finally, the dean thinks an attractive new dormitory is helpful to attract more students.
But this is not necessarily the case. When students and parents choose schools, dormitory is not the key factor .Usually they make choices by comparing other factors such as academic level and expense. At the same time ,while an new dormitory will attract more students, then it is always impossible to reach the needs of the dormitory because more new students will come for the new dormitory.

To summarize, there is no inevitable relationship between a new dormitory and an increasing enrollment. At the same time ,the dean did not take acount of other factors. And if a new dormitory could attract new students,it is always lack of new dormitory. So the dean’s reasons for the new dormitory are considerable.
