TOPIC: ISSUE159 - "The human mind will always be superior to machines because machines are only tools of human minds."
WORDS: 444 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2006-2-1
Whether human mind will always be superior to machines which are only tools of human minds? As far as I am concerned, it largely depends on the definition of the superiority. In the cases when the quick and accurate calculation is required, it is the machines that take the lead. When it comes to the complicated decision-making, we human being undoubtedly hold the advantage.
Admittedly, as the proverb goes, "to err is human", it is inevitable for human to make mistakes. When faced with a list of boring chores, especially those demanding speed and accuracy, human will be bogged in the morass. Due to deficiency in physical and psychological levels, human cannot keep the brain running inerrantly. We often regret our foibles or peccadillos we made when absent-minded or distracted. However, the machine will not suffer from the unsteady physical and psychological factors. As long as their programme is free from bugs and as long as the power is not cut off during the process, machines will get the precise answer in just a few seconds. Compared to the circuit based on the swift on-off switch, the neurons that human being possess certainly fade without any suspicion.
Even if the machines are proficient in tackling numerous calculation and onerous work, machines lack the ability to think on their own and act from expedience according to the occasions. Consider, if one new parameter is added to a problem, machines will lose their power for they cannot recognize what it is, and thus cannot proceed the inherent programme successfully. On the contrary, human will relate the new situation with a previous one stored in the memory or the experience. After a not very long period of rumination, a solution will occur to him. In this sense, human mind will be superior to the machines.
While as the technology develops, there are some machines possessed of intelligence, which can make decisions automatically according to the variation of the condition. It seems that the gap between human and machines concerning adjusting to the ever-changing situations has been bridged. Nonetheless, such intelligence that machines demonstrate is nothing but artificial, that is, the programme coping the variants is set in advance by humans. What's more, the aim of devising machine is to overcome the shortcomings of human. So in this context, machines are another form embodying our human mind. Therefore, the superiority between human and machines is somewhat meaningless.
In sum, machines exceed human mind in some aspects. However, human mind will always be superior to machines for the reason that they are not only the tools themselves, but just another form revealing human intellect as well. |
