TOPIC: ISSUE160 - "The most essentialquality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committedto particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easilyinfluenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."

Whether the ability to keep consistentlycommitted to particular principles and objectives is the most important qualityof an effective leader? And will the leader who is quickly and easily influencedby shifts in popular opinion accomplish little? The speaker claims yes to bothquestions. I fundamentally agree with the speaker. In my point of view, it isvital for the leaders to stick to the principles and objectives; in themeanwhile, listening to the people's voices is also indispensable.

On one hand, I totally agree with thespeaker that the firm constancy of the principles and objectives plays animportant role in the effective works. Clearly, the leader should insist onwhat he think is right and deserves to do, or he will accomplish nothing.Because the common sense tell us that whatever the plan or proposal is, there arealways two voices---support and against. If the leader waver his own particularprincipals and objectives instead of accepting people's requirement, he must tobe confused about it. Because each side has their own sound reasons, it is hardto make a choice and impossible for the leader to meet everyone's need.

In addition, people are inclined to beinfluenced by the mainstream media that their opinions are more likely tochange all the time. In this situation, even assuming all the people have thesame willingness, it is still unwise for the leader to follow the people. Whatthe leader should do is to make decisions by his own judgment---whether thisplan or proposal is feasible, whether it can satisfy the demands of the mostpeople, whether it can bring benefits to the people, whether it can make theeconomy of the country boomed, whether it is helpful to elevate the country'sinternational status and so forth, rather than changing the decision accordingto the outside unmatured voices. Only in this way can things to be well carriedout and to be effectively done.

On the other hand, although leader isencouraged to stick to the particular principles and objectives, it is alsonecessary for the leader to consider other's advices, not quickly and easilybut thoughtfully and cautiously. One reason for my opinion is that the world ischanging rapidly every second, many things might be different from themselves inthe past, and the leader may not be familiar with all the stuff around world,so listening to more advices raised by people would be helpful. Constancy of theprinciples and objectives does not mean exclude everything and avoid revising,the leader should keep his principles and objectives not "out offashion" and make it overall improved with the development of the society.

Another reason is that it is entirelypossible that the idea or the proposal of the leader is wrong, everyone would makemistakes, and if he continuously insists on the idea or the proposal, therewill be a dangerous situation. Not only himself but also the people even thecountry would suffer. Adolf Hitler is a good example. In his time, many ideasof him are opposite to his people, but he insist on doing things in his own waywithout take other’s suggestions and exhortations into consideration andfinally bring a large disaster to the people all over the world. From thisexample we can obviously see the significance of adopt others’ advices.

To sum up, moderation should be made. Theleader should firmly do what he think is right, whereas it does not mean hecould ignore others’ proposals. When there are different voices the leadershould firstly think it over and over, whether it is really worthy to beadopted. Secondly make the final decision.
