I basically agree with the claim that the surest indicator of a nation is the general welfare of its entire people rather than the achievements of some individuals. In addition, the welfare is the fundamental standard to evaluate a nation meanwhile the contributions of rulers, artists, or scientists would shorten the distance between an ordinary nation and a great one.

The quality of general welfare would be a significant standard to distinguish a great nation from inferior nations. When confront with emergent situation, the difference between welfare guarantee would be clearly recognized. For instance, the recently happened earthquake in Haiti which caused almost hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives. Moreover, we could take a look at its social situation. After the crisis, innumerable victims had lost their homes and stayed on the ruins, No one knows where to go with their injured and dead, or where to find food and water, and cars can’t get through many streets, which are blocked by fallen houses, and also policemen seem to have made themselves scarce. And another scene which happened in the year 2008 in Sichuan China, the magnitude of earthquake was even more serious than that of Haiti. However, the citizens in the disaster areas immediately received help from the Chinese soldiers who tried their best to find any possible survivals under the ruins. The victims had received enough equipment for living and sufficient food and drinks supplements. As far as I know, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest on earth, while China is a rapid developing country and the superior one in the third world. The two examples could accurately reflect the result that bring about by different quality of welfare. A great nation not only could ensure its people's normal lives but also could efficiency deal with emergency conditions. That's maybe where the real reflection of the function of general welfare.


Furthermore, the achievements of rulers, artists, or scientists together with the insurance of the general welfare could also promote a nation’s property. The welfare of a society would be the insurances of people's basic needs and the achievements of some excellent people pave the way for the individuals to succeed. A nation is the union of people with different backgrounds, characteristics, and ideologies, however they have the common wish, that is living and working in a comfortable circumstance and have the opportunity to achieve their dreams. Rulers could come out appropriate rules to regulate the normal lives, and make sure that each individual would clearly about what his or her duty is. Artists as the spiritual mentors in the society who could let people better understand the comprehensive of the world and experience a different life. And scientists who form the main power of developing could improve the nation’s competition and bring convenience to the daily life. All these significant functions would ensure the welfare works well, and thus contribute to a great nation.

In conclusion, a great nation should fundamentally make sure its people have basic needs for survival, and then provide the opportunity to pursue both mental and material achievements. Only in this way, a nation would be superior and be honored as a great nation.
