TOPIC: ISSUE203 - "The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines."

With the process of globalization, it has becoming a big challenge for us people to understand the character of other society. Some people hold the view that by examining the character of the men and women whom the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines, we could easily and quickly understand that society's character. At the first glance, this saying seems to be convincing, because in every society, people do respect some heroes or heroines for their contribution. However, further reflection tells me that it might be hasty sometimes for the reason that a society is consisted not only by those elites but also by ordinary people. In my point of view, we could not ignore the ordinary people's character indeed when we try to understand a society.

Firstly we would all agree that the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines could represent the society's value standard in some extent. The reason for people to choose heroes is that by admiring those outstanding people, others would like to follow them and try to be success, too. Those heroes always have talented skills and persistence on the road to searching for the truth. Take Gandhi as an example, who is call the Father of the India nation. He was a very kind and patient person. By his non-violence movement and efforts, India could finally become a independent country. Gandhi was chosen to be India's hero. Many India children listen to his story from their childhood and respect him very much. Nowadays no one could deny that India has becoming more and more powerful in the whole world and the Gandhi's spirit is also regarded as the character of the India people: persistence, braveness and peace-loving. When we know the story of him, we could better understand the character of the India nation and catch the reason that why India has progressed in that high speed. Therefore, we could safety reach the conclusion that by understanding the character of a society's hero, we could understand that culture better.

However, it is still a doubtful question that whether it is the best way, because a society obviously consists of its heroes, and even more importantly, its citizens. If we overlook the importance of studying the character of its ordinary people, we might not understand the society well. Heroes are the model of a society's value, but not everyone could be that prefect. Instead, more people live a kind of easy life (common), which also could represent the character of a society. The Taliban, who are considered as the most important terrorism in western world, on the other hand are regarded as muslins' hero by some Afghanistani, because what they did from our aspect is harmful and anti-humanity but from some muslins' aspect is Jihad, one of the religion duty in Islam. If we try to understand the Islamic society by understand the character of Taliban, we would make the conclusion that those muslins are terrible and aggressive people. However, when we look to the ordinary people in that society, we would know that the local people suffered a lot from the wars and they are kind and peace-loving people just as us. In that case, the heroes could not represent the society's character. It will be hasty even unfair to judge the whole society only be examining the character of those heroes.

To sum up, from what have discussed above, we might all agree that only by examining the heroes' character to understand a society is far from convincing and fair. We should not only study the case of heroes but also observe the normal life of a society in order to get a warranted understanding. Neither of them could be ignored so that our conclusion would not be doubtful.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT180 - The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company.

"Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read costs only $500 per employee-a small price to pay when you consider the benefits to Acme. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of our employees to take the Easy Read course."

In this argument, the author claims that by requiring all of the employees to take the Easy Read course, Acme would benefit greatly. He also cites some proofs: two graduates from this course have made great progress. Moreover, the cost of the course is small. At the first glance, this recommendation seems to be convincing. However, further reflection tells me that it might be really doubtful because of several flaws involved in itself.

First and foremost, the author provides two graduates from this course as example to show that this course would increase the employees' ability, but this example itself is unfounded. Firstly the two graduates are too small in quantity to represent the whole gradates' result. Perhaps other graduates do not benefit from this course clearly. Besides, we have to notice that there is no evidence to show that the progress the two graduates have made is necessary related to this course. Maybe those two people are talented and skillful themselves, therefore would make the assumption become unwarranted. Without ruling out all other possibilities, we could not reach the conclusion that this course could improve the workers' ability.

Another flaw this argument suffered is that it is a ridiculous saying that the faster you can read the more information you can absorb in a single workday. As everyone acknowledges, absorbing knowledge is a complex process, which depends mostly on the personal education background and ability to understand what the person has read. The speed of reading could not ensure understanding; even sometimes the fast reading would make people careless and lose some information. Since the assumption has been proved a mistake one, maybe the goal of this course would also be meaningless in some extent.

Lastly I have to point out is that even through by taking this course our employees could become more acknowledged and our productivity could be improved, no one can guarantee the greatly benefit, either. Common sense tells us the profit or benefit is consisted by revenue and cost. Although we might earn much after our employees have taken this course, we could not ignore the cost of the course. 500 dollars for each one might not be too much bucks, but when every employee costs 500 dollars, it might add up to a huge number. Without other proofs to show this would be an absolute benefit decision, we could not accept the recommendation hasty.

In sum, this argument itself has many logic flaws that make it unconvincing for us. Not until the author could give more warranted reasons and solve all the problems discussed above, we could not suggest the president of Acme Publishing Company to take this course in the whole company.
