TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 572 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2010-2-19 11:15:28
Every morning, if your mood is happy and cheerful, you will be tend to choose a bright color clothes and be warm to everyone; if you feel depressed, you are more likely to choose a dark color clothes and cool to people around. Yes, I partly agree with the author that in some extent people's clothes and behavior can reveal their attitudes and interests; however, it is not often the case. But, when meet the issue that whether appearance and behavior can reveal a society's ideas and values, I disagree with the author totally.
Admittedly, in many situations clothes and body languages can tell us some information about its master's attitudes and interests. If you can observe all kinds of passengers for several minutes at airport or other crowded places, you will agree with me on this viewpoint. You will find that just from people’s appearance and behavior, you can know many things about them. For example, if a man wears decent clothes with a suitcase, and seems in a hurry, then he tends to have a positive attitude toward work and be interested in improving his work performance. If a boy wears colorful and exaggerated clothes with loud music from his headphone, he is mostly likely to have an active attitude toward fashion and be interested in pop music. How surprise it is, you have not recognized these men, however, you can tell out something about each one of them! Yes, their appearance and behavior tell you all.
However, just form one’s clothes and behavior, you can not always tell this information. After all, not all attitudes and hobbies can be reflected by one’s appearance and body languages. For example, at a party of bird lovers, you can hardly tell they all love birds and hold an active attitude toward life just through their appearance and behavior, for they all dress different and act different, and there is no common point on these ostensible features. Furthermore, do you remember the 9.11 event several years ago? If appearance and behavior always work, then security inspectors could have detected terrorists form the passengers and thus avoid that tragedy. If these ostensible features always work, we need not to spend large mount of money on our homeland’s safe guard every year; instead we just need training our security inspectors how to detect terrorists and criminals through their clothes and body languages. How absurd it is! Thus, sometimes clothes and behavior will lie to us.
Furthermore, a society' ideas and values, such as our attitude toward heroes or heroines and standard for success, can not be easily realized from these ostensible features. These ideas and values exist in our deep heart and can not be expressed easily. For instance, our society takes those who can do contribution for country as hero or heroine; how can you tell this out just from observing people's clothes and behavior? Or how can you tell a new country’s standard for success when you first time arrive at its airport and observe its people’s clothes and behavior? A society’s ideas and values are something deep in its citizens’ mind, and only can be realized through learning this society’s history and traditional cultures.
To sum up, people's clothes and behavior can tell us some information about their attitudes and interests; however it is not always the case. But a society's ideas and values can not be revealed by these ostensible features. |
