TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

Have you ever meet a situation that the new principle you learned in class is so hard to accept, for you have some suspicions about it? In this situation, will you challenge your teacher or passively accept this principle? When meeting the issue whether students should have skepticism, I see with the author and hold the assertion that skepticism is definitely necessary in our learning process.

To begin with, skepticism can help one truly understand the knowledge he/she learned. Take situation at beginning of the article for example, only when you challenge your teacher, can you fully understand that principle. If you accept it passively, you will still be troubled by questions with this principle in your homework or tests, for you have not fully understood it. Through discussing with your teacher, you will know why your viewpoint is wrong. (The other situation you are right will discuss after.) Unless one can tell how the opposite viewpoints are wrong, can he/she really understand one theory. In debate, for instance, only if one has a better understanding of his/her point of view, can he/she protect his/her standpoint effectively. Additionally, if you think a theory in one book is dubious, and you can not talk to its author directly, perhaps they are in other countries or even died, at this circumstance, your teachers, classmates and parents are all best resorts. With their help, you could solve your contradiction more quickly and have a sufficient understanding of the theory. In any situation you have suspicions in your learning, remember to solve that contradiction.

In addition, skepticism can bring progress to science. Through numerous scientists challenging the old classical theories, our sciences make great progress. Here consider the situation mentioned above that it is you not the teacher or textbook are right. If you could prove your viewpoint is true, that principle in your text book would be rewritten, which is a really contribution to that course. History is replete with such examples. Newton's classical mechanics was once accepted as perfect, however, some latter students found these theories can only been used in macroscopic objects, when meeting microscopic objects, such as molecular, atom, proton and neutron, these theories are not suited. Due to this skepticism, many years later, we have a new course, micro-mechanics. Additionally, challenging oneself is also a good way to scientific progress. Priogogine, for instance, the father of Dissipation Structure Theory (DST), won Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1977, suspected himself whether his theory can be used in other areas besides in thermodynamics. After several years research, he gave another famous paper to demonstrate how DST can be used in economy. From that on, many scientists in other areas tried to use this classical theory in their own researches, and DST has become a general methodology in scientific research. Thus, the power of skepticism is strong in science progress.

Finally, skepticism is also a good way for our society to make progress. A proper example here is every four years election in our country. Two parties suspect and challenge each other. Through this, our new government will be more powerful. For instance, Democratic Party (DP) will suspect Republican Party (RP) on its policies about health care system, while RP will attack DP's defects on homeland security. In order to win a higher rate of support, two parties will adjust their policies more rational and scientific, so finally our people and country will be benefited. In our daily life, public's against voice is also a good way to maintain our country's stability and prosperity. If government's policies are hasty and irrational, our newspapers, websites and television will give numerous opposite reports to remind the government. Without these opposite voices and suspicions, it is hard to image how our stability and prosperity will maintain.

To sum up, skepticism is a good not only for learning, but also for scientific and social progress.
