131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
Can we uncover the hidden ideas and impulses of a society through the arts, say painting, music, literature and so on, as the speaker maintains? I concede that the arts communicate the feelings of people, especially of the artists. Moreover, history tells us that classical arts indicate the characters of a race. However, observing the ideas and impulses of a society only through the arts is not enough, and there are still other forms, taking mass media for example.
The chief reason why I generally agree with the statement has to do with the universal recognition that art is the mold of feeling. As Tolstoy put it, "Art is not a handcraft, is the transmission of feelings artists has experienced." For example, in the Renaissance times, the common theme of all the paintings, literature and architectures, whose apparent contents were various though, is generally considered to be the liberty and renaissance of humanity, because people who had been depressed by religious authority for several centuries during the medieval times hold the strong impulses to set their souls free and to express their own ideas.
Another reason why I agree with the speaker is that the arts, especially the traditional or mainstream arts, indicate the characters of a race. A compelling example comes to Chinese monochrome, the paragon of Chinese classical ideas. Every excellent painting of Chinese monochrome has the common characteristic which represents the harmony between human beings and the nature. One certification is the layout of the paintings which always come out that most space are filled with natural view such as mountains, trees or animals, but human being, if there is any, appears in very small space that is not distinct. For better understanding, we consider the contrary--classical European oil paintings, which stressed the dominance of human being over the nature. Thus I think this statement is realistic.
Notwithstanding the foregoing merits of the statement, there is still limitation that arts has not the capability of revealing universal and overall facts of a society, in other words, there are many other forms to reflect the hidden ideas and impulses, paragon as media. Our collective life experiences dictate that no form has revealed the ideas and impulses more directly and obviously than mass media, such as newspaper, television and radio. Our everyday life is filled with these media, and these things are easily noticed by most ordinary people, while the arts’ meanings are sometimes implied.
In sum, the arts serve a very important mean to observe the ideas and impulses of a society. Accordingly, art is the mold of feeling as well as the indicator of a race. At the same time, considering other forms of revealing the hidden ideas and impulses is still indispensable, for the sake of better and overall understanding.
