TOPIC: ISSUE207 - "Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."
How do we recognize ourselves today? Such questions are always emerging as people get confused in such a rapid-paced society with increasing spiritual and material wealth. Among various ways towards the answer, form of rituals and ceremonies is one of the efficient methods making sense, which is of help in defining those otherwise disappeared cultures and sense of people themselves.
To begin with, rituals and ceremonies are manifestations of culture, without which the form as well as the essentials of many civilizations are likely to be influenced or even assimilated by others. Especially in the environment of globalization with developed technologies for communication and business, people with different backgrounds become much closer than ever before, followed with gradually disappearing their own culture. Thanks to the process of rituals and ceremonies that always remind people back to their roots that feed them, things are not going so bad. These activities collect together people with same background, make them communicate with each other, popularize substances of the culture, thus protect the cultural heritage from extinct. America is a country with various religions, but each one remains generally independent partly for the reason of rituals and ceremonies. Always knowing what culture belong to, people always keep in mind who they are.
Secondly, as a form of culture, ceremonies and rituals give a chance for people to understand history and, importantly, themselves vividly. People never forget history, not only for their interests about ancient times, but also for its value for today. Sometimes, however, history seems so abstract and far away from us that it more likes landscape we cannot enjoy due to the life today that likes a house limiting our vision. We can imagine what it is outside but are not able to see it with our own eyes. Fortunately, rituals and ceremonies open a window for us to look outside and contact the nature of history. My hometown, Dujiangyan, is famous for the Dujiangyan Irrigation System that was listed as one of the World Cultural Heritages for its function even until today after accomplishment 2200 years ago. On April 5th each year, ritual activities, called Fangshui Festival, are hold to commemorate the designer of the project Li Bin, who was the Major of Dujiangyan City in the State of Qin in the Warring States Period. Visitors around the world come to the site appreciating the performance, listening to the introduction from tourist guide, and feeling the history personally. Throughout the rituals like this, we human beings can know history more, thus understand how we come more profoundly.
Finally, rituals and ceremonies are spiritual sustenance for people to find themselves in hardship and accumulate energy to overcome obstacles. Belief plays an important part in people's lives, proving them with inner momentum and acting like a beacon to guide people towards aims. With believes, rituals and ceremonies slow down people's busy steps and make them thinking about their life and themselves. These activities, just like a harbor, allow tired people, like vagrant boats, to turn for consolation repairing their spirit. I still remember the time when I was moved watching the movie "The Pursuit of Happiness." In the church, Chris and his son as well as other homeless people were inspired by the song "Lord, Don't move that mountain," that gave them the confidence of surviving and courage of struggling. Similarly, other religious or social rituals and ceremonies can also prevent people from getting lost when striving for their livings.
In general, activities of rituals and ceremonies represent typical cultures, helping people keep in touch with their own ones, get more familiar with the history, and protect their believes. From the three points of view, the question at the beginning could be well answered.
