Issue69 government should place few, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development
The author recommends that government should put few restrictions on scientific research and development. In my point of view, I found this statement to be specious. The government on the behalf of social public interest should monitor the uncertainty of scientific research, especially the application of the scientific result.
To begin with, the reason why I agree with the statement lies to some aspects. One aspect is that politicians are not scientists, they are not proficient with the science, it is possible that the guidance or limitations they give are wrong. The development of science indeed makes a contribution to the society. For example establishing the system of disaster prevention may save many people’s lives; growth in the transportation undoubtedly facilitate people when they want to travel or go to work. Therefore government should supply sufficient facilities and the free and tolerant academic atmosphere to support the science. Scientists possibly dedicate his all time and efforts into the scientific research and make a great contribution in a free academic world, because they need such an atmosphere where they can think freely about all kinds of momentous problems without any disturbing from the outer. Too many repressions and restrictions with little freedom enable to make scientists not go further on the way to scientific culmination
Another aspect lies to the government must put more emphasis on research which are useful for their interests and can bring the economical benefits. However, those basic sciences will be so negligible that development of science is unbalanced. Common sense tells us the balance of different subjects is an essential factor in the development of science.
However, even though the sciences need a free and tolerant academic atmosphere, the government still has a right to monitor the uncertainty of scientific research, especially when they threaten the society.
Such as the newly biomedical focus---CLONE which damage today's moralities if it was used to clone people themselves. Some people even use this technology on the commercial today, but nor for the science research itself. Under this condition, government should take measures to prevent the application of the science. Besides, a great many weapons of mass destruction are invented and applied to wars with the drive of someone’s ambitions. It is on account of no restrictions on the weapons that all kinds of new destructive weapons are step by step researched and designed by a number of military scientists, which ultimately poses a great threat to human life. Therefore, some necessary constrains on scientific research and development are indispensable.
To sum up, from what we discussed above, science itself is not incorrect, after it is the key to lead us to reality and essence of the world. However, the government should put more restrictions on the use of research results not the science research itself, and make sure that these results are not abused and are exerted in the beneficial way,
