The issue asserts that political leaders are necessary to withhold information from the public. I am in agreement with this assertion insofar as it is confined in some special areas such as national secrets. Otherwise I am totally protesting with the idea that the leaders can withhold any critical information when they think it is necessary no matter what the consequence of a revelation will be and what effects the publication will take to them.
Admittedly, in some special circumstances, it is necessary and desirable for governments to keep some information. To consider such an example, if the American and Britain government had not withheld the schedule and plot of the Normandy Invasion from the public, Hitler would acknowledge his deficiencies in his disposition of the German armies, and then the Allies might lose the victory of Normandy war and the final defeat of Fascism would be procrastinated.
Not only in the aspects of wars and military events, but also in some other aspects such as diplomacy and economy should the leaders announce the public all he knows and understands. Suppose you are the leader of one small country among several other huge and powerful countries, then you must make some outstanding and creative strategies to render the survival and prosperity of your country. So certainly and absolutely the citizens in your country could not know all your tactics or else the tactics are no longer tactics.
Notwithstanding at times concealing information is needed, in most cases should not the leaders withhold any information. The public has the right to know the truth of the affairs and policies which have relations to their rights because the government represents the people to manage all kinds of social affairs and protect their interest.
The leaders’ power stem from each citizen in his country, so in no circumstance should they conspire to keep a plan concealed among them.
Considering the terrible consequences of the withstanding or even obstructing the ways the people get the information, my demonstration will be proved as well. When the Nazis withstand and even distort some truths, the whole nation comes into a belligerent machine for the volition of Hitler and his subordinates and the massacre of 6 million Jews happened in this planet. When the Soviet Union withstands some information from the West, the surveillance is rampant and the principles and laws overlooked considering what happened in the Great Purge. Finally the whole skyscraper collapsed and the united country didn’t exist on the earth any more.
In sum, except for some particular information in particular circumstances, the leaders have no rights and excuses to withstand information from the citizens. And the withstanding of the truths will always lead to a disaster to the country afterwards.
