TOPIC: ARGUMENT188 - A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.


In this argument, the writer argues that the kappa opioids (K) should be used for women to relieve pain, ignoring other situations, while men should avoid it. What's more, it is also suggested that all medications should be reevaluated separately referring to sex. To bolster the conclusion, the author cites an experiment of K's function on males and females receiving their wisdom teeth extraction. The evidence seems convinced and the logic looks reasonable, but careful scrutiny reveals several flaws that render the conclusions unpersuasive. If the inconsiderate suggestions are adopted blindly, it is probably followed by a wasted investment for reevaluation and misdirection for doctors to prescribe.

First of all, the sample of the experiment is too small to guarantee the precision of the result, which undermines the suggestions. In medical researches, the sample is supposed to be large, and the subjects should be randomly chosen. In the experiment cited, however, only 28 men and 20 women are investigated that cannot represent whole picture of the truth. If a more persuasive result is provided, at least a much larger group of patients is needed, in order to cover all the possible conditions such as different ages, seriousness, body conditions and so forth that contribute to a more comprehensive analysis of the result.

Secondly, without an accurate definition of degrees of pain in the experiment, the feelings of pain from patients are suspect. With the same extent of pain, different persons may have different responses. Maybe women are more caring about their appearances, leading to their less expressions of pain. Moreover, it is said that women are more tolerant than men because of their experience such as delivery and other physiological phenomena, so having the same pain they may feel less unbearable than men. Therefore, from the reports of patients, we still cannot tell out exactly the pain differences between female and male.

Finally, even though the result of the experiment is correct, the advices from the arguer are unsound as it stands. The experiment is only limited to the field of teeth extraction, without any other evidence to support that K is widely useful for women whenever painkiller is required. Furthermore, the suggestion of reevaluation of all medications is also unsupported. Many ailments, such as cold or lax, cause the same symptom towards men and women, so there is no need to reevaluate the relevant medicines.

In sum, the experiment cited suffers at least two flaws that make its result fail to support the conclusion. Meanwhile, the author is hasty in obtaining the suggestions without any other related research and investigation about the functions of medications used for different sexes. Thereby, only when the problems are addressed can a more appropriate advice be made.
