本人第一篇issue,不限时写的。很郁闷的是怎么写都不到400 晕~请大家帮忙改改

"Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."

I concede that rituals and ceremonies have a significant effect on the definition of a culture. However,I hold a strong point in that societies or groups of people would not decrease their sense of who they are even without them.

Some people actually depends on rituals and ceremonies to help themselves to keep a sense of who they are. For instance, large quantities of Chinese who have emigrated to America years ago, now still celebrate the Spring Festival to memorize the life in their hometown and at the same time keep in mind that they are Chinese wherever they go. As is known to all,Spring Festival is the most significant holiday in China. In this way overseas Chinese demonstrate their deep feelings for their motherland and seek for their sense of belonging.

However, more often than not, people would not have a diminished sense of their identity without the rituals and ceremonies. For example, peter is a student but he doesn’t need any rituals or ceremonies to prove that he is a student. What about she is mother of two chilren, does she have to join some rituals and ceremonies to prove to his chilren that she’s their mother? Any one would consider it ludicrous. Some identities do not need any rituals and ceremonies to prove.

In addition, rituals and ceremonies are not the only parts of a culture. With the
accelerating development of the society, culture has turned into a more and more diverse condition.New cultural customs has gradually formed and injected fresh vigor into the original culture. For instance,China has introduced Christmas from western countries and now Christmas has become very popular in China. On every
December 25th most Chinese enjoy singing Christmas songs and sending cards to friends. Some even hold a big party to celebrate Christmas. Large shopping centers also launch different kinds of merchandise discounts to promote their sales. Christmas ,to a large extent, enriches Chinese people’s life.

In a word, although rituals and ceremonies help define a culture,I insist that they are not the only way to define a culture and some identity does not need rituals and ceremonies to define. New cultural customs are an indispensible part of the definition of a culture. It is valuable to bring new vitality to a culture and keep it developing healthily.
