     Should all faculties be required to spend time working outside the academic world in profession relevant to the courses they teach. It might be tempting to agree with the speaker based on gaining in a variety of respects when a professor complements academic duties with real-world experience. However a far more compelling argument can be made that it will put the faculty off. In sum, I do not side with the statement.

Turning first to work outside, certain aspects of working outside do inform us that the quality of instruction will be lowered. There is one possibility that outside work will absorb most of faculty’s time. Or outside job is very remunerative; the faculties are willing to place more attentions on it. Undoubtedly, it will cause serious consequences that the faculties will ignore the teaching task which is lower the quality of instruction. Consider the hot industries, such as management, many management science teachers engage in their fields and do as a part-time administrators in outside firm that make them fulfill the teaching task indiscreetly.

Admittedly, some disciplines develop rapidly, and a professor should complements academic duties with real-world experience indeed. Working in outside firm is not the only alternative to inform about current trends. Consider various ways and choice to engage in their fields, such as attending a seminar in which top figures in their fields talk over the freshest and most contagious information. Do research online is another superior choice in any case. The professional database such as SciFinder Scholar will embody the papers with special experimental techniques, advanced ideas and epoch-making discoveries from all over the world. Thus, professors bring some freshest and promptest news of the principles and theories discuss in textbooks to their students from the seminar or the Internet that may spark interest and even motivate some students to pursue the field as a career.

A third shortcoming to work outside the academic world is that outside working has little to do with the basic disciplinary research. Mathematics, for example, develop from the operation of the professor and the creative thinking which can hardly get inspiration from outside work. An even more remarkable example is physics, which is based on faculty’s deep understanding of their fields of study and the deep understanding is just the results of longtime independent thinking, analyzing, synthesis and discussion with colleagues not from the experience outside. A mathematician understanding of the conjecture won’t be deeper after he spends ten years on accounting which is obviously math related job. Thus, although real-world experience can be beneficial to some faculties, it doesn’t fit all.

To sum up, I concede that working outside benefits some faculties, yet strictly followed, I disagree that all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
