188. "Success, whether academic or professional, involves an ability to survive in a new
environment and--, eventually, --to change it."
Is the ability to survive in a new environment and to change the environment involved in any type of success, whether academic or professional? I think that, on one hand, the speaker's assertion overstates the importance of environment in academic fields. Nevertheless, on the other hand, the speaker's assertion makes a lot of sense when it comes to the fields of professional.

In the academic fields, researchers and scientists have to adapt themselves to new scientific environment, using latest findings and theories to support their experiments. Consider the field of human evolution. When the fact that human beings actually evolve from apes is tested to be true, every scientist in this field will use this fact to continue their research, instead of sticking to their former wrong hypothesis, perhaps like human beings' ancestors are fish. However, still in this case, the ability of changing the environment makes no sense. The history would not be changed by anyone. What the scientists need to do is to accept this new finding and pursue their study in this direction, rather than endeavoring to change the history. And they actually have no way to change it. Nevertheless, another category of academic filed needs the more ability of changing environment than adapting to environment.  For supporting examples, one needs look no further than the field of environment pollution. It is to lessen pollution and improve the environment we live in that the environmentalists endeavor to do researches and experiments. They duty is not to get accustomed to the current or new environment, but to seek effective ways to change the environment in favor of our human beings. In this case, the ability of changing the environment instead of adapting to the environment is involved deeply in success.

But when we turn to the fields of professional, the speaker's assertion has remarkable merits. Perhaps the most apt example is the field of business. In order to be successful in the field of business, one has to survive the current economic environment and even political environment at first. This is the first-hand requirement of any business. However, this is only not enough to be outstanding in the numerous firms in an industry. Success will always be achieved by those who can look one step further and then, devoting sufficient efforts to change the environment to a more favorable one. For example, when the first generation of computer came into being, those who took advantage of computer gained a lot. Furthermore, it is those who started thinking of bringing computer to every home won at last. Bill Gates is the most successful one. He and his firm make thousands of trials to reduce the size of originally huge computers, and develop software to make computers easier to use for common individuals. His performance brings us to the new age of information. Of course, he himself benefits greatly from this change. Similar cases can be found in other fields of business. Not only the ability of adaptation but also the ability of changing the environment contributes to the final success.

In conclusion, the speaker's assertion that success involves an ability to survive in a new environment and eventually change it is quite enlightening in the professional fields. However, it is not so applicable in academic fields, for each academic field has its own objective that would lean to either ability of the two.
