The reading passage indicates that salvage logging has produced a favorable impact on both forests and economy. The lecturer, however, refutes the views from article with more information and evidence.

In the first place, the dead trees will provide nutrition for new trees rather than leading to dire consequence. The article supports that moving out those salvage loggings will have more space for new trees to grow, and then helps to recover forest areas. On the contrary, salvage logging will not prevent new trees from developing, according to the speaker we learn that dead trees could make soil more nutritious, which will exert positive effect on new trees’ growth.

In the second place, insect can bring active influence on forest being healthy. It is inevitable that decaying woods have caused damage from insect, however, insects are also food supply for other animals who feed on them such birds. And spruce bark beetle is the only insect brought by decaying trees. Hence, the view from reading is challenged by the speaker.

Finally, it is not reality the salvage logging improves economic growth by offering job. Those work positions are not long time job and people have to take training before entering forest, which may not be appropriate for local residents to do. The reading passage indicates that a painting named Portrait of an Elderly Woman is completed by Rembrandt, however, the lecturer refutes this view with more details and strong evidence that this piece of work is Rembrandt’s.

The white fur on lady’s coat is added to that painting after Rembrandt finished it. The article argues that Rembrandt is not an artist who did not consider the details, and such mistake should not appear as servant could not afford an expensive winter coat with beautiful fur. From the lecture, we learnt that white fur is painted in 100 years this picture completed due to time eroded. So speaker challenges what the reading talks.

It is the color of white fur brings differences to that painting. It is true that Rembrandt is good at light and shadow, and so he does in this painting. In fact, the color of original painting did match together and it is changed due to that white fur. Otherwise, the face of woman would not show partially shadow in the painting.

The aim of another piece of wood panel is to value the painting. Following the speaker the larger panel makes this painting more precious since the lady in white fur coat.
