To be an effective leader, must a public leader maintain the highest ethical and moral standards, as the speaker asserts? In a sense, I tend to concur with this statement. Although the speaker begs questions by overlooking the definition of the highest ethical and moral standards and unfairly gives them a second priority, a public leader with the highest ethical and moral standard makes a contribution to the stability and development of society.
When we turn to a public official, we find that the public leader with the highest ethical and moral standards influences a social development by insisting on and publicizing the highest ethical and moral standards. Consider certain prominent and effective leader who have contribute profoundly to a better society, Mahatma Gandhi, who lived ascetic and desired peace employed non-cooperation, non-violence and peaceful resistance as his weapon’s in the strangle against British and spread his views to the mass. In a short time, many people who were most fully under the influences of Gandhi responded to the call of him. A leader with the highest moral and ethical standard can save the country; by contrast, a leader without the highest moral and ethical standard will bring bad effects to the society. Yet even a cursory review of the private lives of past American Presidents reveals substantial evidence that Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy had extramarital affairs, which would make a credibility gap between the mass and the government and destroy the social stabilization. In short, a public official with the highest ethical and moral standard will spread the standards and influences others; if not, a public official would do harm to the society.
I turn next to that a public official with the highest ethical and moral standard can stabilize the economy and society. Obviously, a public official with the highest ethical and moral conforms to laws and regulation; if not, it will be destructive to the economy and society. The financial crisis, for example, is caused by the executives’ illegal activities in the financial institution for a long time. If the executives are not profit-driven and conforms the regulations and laws, many economic losses can be withdrawn. An even more remarkable example is the embezzlement of funds. Due to the avarice, the public contempt for the very legal system which not only lead to their forfeiture of leadership but also enhance the wide gap between the rich and the poor which will destroy the stabilization of society. Therefore, a public official with the highest ethical and moral standard conforms the laws and regulations, which will make sense to the society.
Finally, the public official with the highest ethical and moral standard pushes the society to be more competitive and creative. A public official with the highest ethical and moral standards has the power to request others to follow the highest ethical and moral standards. For example, if a public official disapproves of experimenting on animals, he can request the professors or laboratory to experiment without animals when he examines their projects. Obviously, it is a higher standard to professor and it will push the professor to create new methods of experiment that will make the society more creative and competitive.
In sum, history informs us that effective leader requires adherence to high standards of public morality that will be advantage to the society. |
