74.The most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people is through the use of images, not language.
总算凑在45M里写好了……稍微改掉了几个错别字……
Recent years witness televisions, movies, internet and other new media prevail our life. Communication among our life is gradually replaced by surround sound and stereo screen. Miller an American literate even pronounced an argument so-called “the end of literature” that literature is becoming feeble and will die out at last. This argument is actually a representation of the conflict between images and language. However, those who believe that images are superior to language in group communication, including Miller, obviously ignore the fundamental status of language in communication. In fact, images and language are two important instruments in communication. It is the complementation of images and language that provides a more efficient way to communicate. None of single of them can be regarded the most effective way。
One of the most compelling arguments refutes the argument that images are more efficient than language is that language is actually more precise and persuasive than images. For example, even though it is in such an image-media-developed eras, not a known man will attempt to explicate an idea or value by merely some images at a conference or speech. Language is indispensible when we are expressing a complicated idea or value because images are likely to distort the meaning. Another compelling argument is to do with the fundamental status. Language is an elementary communication tool that contains a great enchantment. In first half of 20 century when the television just emerged, a haze of horror spread all over the broadcast industries that broadcast would become washed out. However, broadcast is still one of important media in our life till today, showing its great vitality. It is an good proof to language’s significance.
On the other hand, language has the merits like easy recording and convenient communicating compared with images. From the computer saving perspective, generally the space that a phrase of words occupies is one tenth of what images of same information do. Furthermore, it is easy for one to retell an idea or value within language, but hard by images. Thus language are more effective than images in communication.
Admittedly, compared with language, images provide a more vivid and direct means for large audiences. Images can just perfectly illuminate what language cannot do. For instance, when we are learning geometry, reading drawing images are compulsory for every student. None of geometry teachers can instruct students by merely language. Moreover, images as a kind of art, can illumine people with a totally different aesthetic from language, which is exactly what painters, sculptors, and directors are good at. In fact, speakers always perfect their conference sand speeches by image tools like Power Point.
In conclusion, to combine the merits of images and language, the efficiency of communication can be greatly enhanced. |
