In a world of information and complexity, there is a controversy that social customs and ethics are not only affected, but determined by technologies. As far as I am concerned, I cannot totally agree with the issue. It is true that technologies change our society in a great degree, however, they still cannot make our social directions.

First and foremost, our customs and ethics indeed are influenced by technologies. In ancient days, our ancestors lived in convenient lives--they did not have to work hard and had much more leisure time than we do today. So they had time to cook at home every day while we nearly have no time to cook for ourselves and have to eat fast food in restaurants. That is to say, technologies make our life busier and as a result, affect our customs. Besides, with quicker pace for work, men cannot support their families all by themselves, thus women have to work outside, such as work in factories, shops. We know that hundreds of years ago, women were not allowed to work outside, since at that times people thought it harmed their ethics. Now there are no restrictions for women to work in any fields. It is the technologies that enable those changes in our customs and ethics.

However, technologies make little fundamental decisions, if any, to our social life. For instance, in China, our spring festival lasts thousands of years, even technologies develop in quick paces in recent years, and it still remains as it was. During spring festival, families get together to communicate with each other. Elders give their offspring red bag. People eat dumplings and set fireworks at night. All of those run like thousands of years ago. In addition, kindness is a merit last a myriad of years, and has never changed its means by the determination of technologies. Ancestors thought it was good, also we consider it is a pretty thing. There are mountains of things remain unchanged, therefore the issue that technologies make determinations for social customs and ethics is not valid.

In fact, our social customs and ethics restrict the developments of technologies. We are able to make more great changes in technologies if no customs and ethics restrict us. For example, our technology is mature enough to make clone man while it is not allowed nowadays. Because our society will be in chaos and there will be panic in people due to they cannot distinguish two individuals exactly alike. Also, the weapons of mass destructive are confined since we have to enable the world peace. From affairs discussed above, a conclusion came that it is social customs and ethics limit the evolution of technologies.

To sum up, conceding that technologies change our social customs and ethics in a great degree, but, they make almost no basic decisions for us. Also, sometimes our social customs and ethics give restrictions to the developments of technologies.
