And in fact, in most of people's views, art critics seem to become a negative role in art world. Does the critic not give society anything of lasing value? I do not think so. Whether a person is the artist or the critic, I think he/her will leave lasting value for society only if he/her does a great job and creates immortal artworks.

As not every artist's works is remembered by society, most of critics' contribution is forgotten by people in short time. But we cannot deny that a few great critics play a crucial role in art world and promote the modern art's development. For instance, in nineteenth century, John Ruskin, English art critic, who is famous for his book "Modern Painters", had given society plentiful spiritual wealth. If you carefully search in history record, there still exist many art critics who have given something of lasting value for society. Thus, when we enjoy the great artworks brought by artists, please do not forget some critics have pushed ahead the progress of art and kept them health. Admittedly, some critics sometimes restrain the development of art. But, by common sense, we know, not each scientist's contribution is positive for society, and their efforts usually useless for the society. Thus, it is unfair and unpractical to ask for every critic will do a great job.

Yet what do the concrete functions of critics produce lasting value? Generally speaking, there are two main basic functions among all effects. The first one, some artworks are expressed with complicated ideas, or some artworks are created with professional skills, which general readers do not know. Under this circumstance, the critic could use simple words to introduce the artworks for readers and make them comprehend the works better. Actually, numerous artworks are remembered by people in this way, such as “Sunflower” created by van Gogh.Thus, attracting more people like art, critics introduce them more great artworks. In this sense, critics have made lasting value for society. Another function is helping the artist construct the complete theory to guide the development of art, while critics provide useful feedback and constructive criticism for artists. Like the tree and soil, without critics’ nutrient, artists cannot grow healthily.

More important, without art critics, art world hardly exist for one more day. Actually, though art emphasizes more on creativity and individuality, learning or consulting with each other and listening to other artists or critics’ feedback are still crucial for creating works with lasting value. After all, no artists can survive independently without accepting any artistic framework or others’ achievements. Moreover, a great artist is also an excellent art critic. For example, John Ruskin is not one famous art critic, but he also one famous writers. Similarly, such as Voltaire, Ernst Gombrich and so forth, all of them are not only great artists but also art critics. Thus, like one indivisible body, both the artist and the critic give the society something of lasting value.

In sum, as same as outstanding artists, some brilliant critic also give lasting value for society, which is conceived by the two basic functions of art critics. Both the artist and the art critic play an important role in art world, and people cannot ignore critics’ contribution only due to less attention on critics. Otherwise, the art world will lose the original force for creating.
