In my opinion, the luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life are harmless at most of time, and they can benefit people a lot. Meanwhile, they can do harm to people's characters like being truly strong and independent, as I will discuss below.

As the technology developing faster and faster, modernization is more and more general. As a result, our life becomes luxury and convenient compared to our ancestors’. Just focus on the transportation. Today's way to go from place A to place B is various and free to choose. You can choose to go by car, by train, or by plant (if the road or railway or airport is available). So, most of the time, it’s up to you to decide how to leave for other place. If you consider how difficult our ancestors traveling from one place to another by horse or even on foot and spending such a long time on the road, you have to admit that the technology brings us luxuries and conveniences. But think twice. More and more people are wasting time on their automobiles because of the traffic jams or the longer distance from their workplace to their homes. Ironically, we cannot make a better choice to take other way to transfer. That is to say, we know we will lose a lot of time on the vehicles, but we still depend on the vehicles to transfer us from here to there. Actually, this is only one example that the luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life prevent people from independent.

Another example is more typical. Let's take a look at the internet. Most people believe that internet can bring us luxuries and conveniences; for instance, it can let you sit before the screen and just click the buttons to search the information you need without going to the faraway libraries or bookstores. And when you are hungry, just make the order online and the fast food will soon be sent to you. But not make the conclusion so hasty. We cannot ignore the children who are addicted to the net become ill-tempered or cold to real people around them but kind only to their so-called cyberfriends. What a pity that they put themselves into the net too deep to return again. Their character is damaged, let alone the truly strengthen or the independence.

So we have to admit that the luxuries and conveniences of our daily life can do a lot of benefit to us, but it is harmful sometimes. They can affect the people's characters, in some situations. However, there are the external factors that sometimes affect our characters, while some other external factors as well as internal factors will be more primary. Some people will suffer from a disaster during their life (maybe a severe illness or a bad traffic accident); many of them can survive from the disaster and fight against to the destiny. It entirely presents the strong and independent characters the person has; they hold fast to the dream that everything will be OK again. So we can conclude that the luxuries and conveniences have not prevent us becoming truly strong and independence.

In sum, the luxuries and conveniences make our life enjoyable and colorful, although they sometimes bring us obstacles. We should take advantage of them and avoid the disadvantages which prevent us from being truly strong and independent.
