It is not extremely uncommon that we judge one’s characteristics from his appearance and actions nowadays. Nevertheless, it may after all be accepted as one approach that determines his interest, attitudes and other characters. For example, those amazingly fun and festive looks for kids during the celebrations; somber colors are always worn to show sorrow and grief in funeral, and sometimes white clothing reveals the religious reverence to God or another worship. In addition, in the specific era, the appearance may even exhibit the values of the whole society. Simply we may look at the period during World War, many people then was dressed in military uniform, which indicates the yearns for victory and future. While in the 21st century, people may wear modern clothes or even eco-friendly clothes, which indicates that people are pursuing ethical fashion and beauty nowadays.

However, in practice, this statement may be false. There was a famous Chinese proverb that describes the judgments and it says that “Men cannot be judged by their looks”. Although it presents an absolute standpoint on the judgments, it is still a revelation sometimes. For example, for those nice guys, some might be shy introverted and this makes them appear reclusive or stuck up somewhat. While some might look out-going, gregarious and fun-loving, which gives the appearance of being flighty or overbearing. However, they are all nice people and one cannot know until one knows the person. In addition, person’s circumstance especially the dress hinders his actual situation. These examples may come from the schools, industrial manufactures and companies where all the employees are required to act and be dressed the same, thus, we couldn’t simply judge them by observing their appearance.

As aforementioned previously, occasionally snap judgments could be made based on appearance, however, from my perspective, it is ridiculous and unwarranted to determine the society’s values based on appearance of people. Basically, a value is a belief, a mission, or a philosophy that is meaningful to one. What’s more, society’s values reflect the highest principal of mind and thought, which could be considered one combined by the individuals’ values. Obviously, values refer to the deep-seated and innermost beliefs and we cannot simply determine values from outward appearance which could tell the person’s circumstances and first impression. Furthermore, it is ungrounded that extends the individual’s appearance to the values of the whole society. What we should do is to live in the society and experience it’s people, culture and perspectives. By communicating with the people, one is able to perceive the intrinsic values instead of superficial judgment by observation which implies a kind of manifestation that lacks of intellect and discretion.

All in all, appearance invariably reflects one’s characteristics and partially reveals one’s inter circumstances. However, it is not sensible to judge people merely by observing their appearance. As a result, the determined society’s values and ideas may be aberrant. Since the values stem from the innermost belief, society values, in a certain aspect, reveals the ethnic spirit and could be recognized explicitly when critical events happened on the society or ethnic.
