130"How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."


The speaker states that it is a pity we have not raised our children properly, for it is the extent to which our children are socialized that determines the future of our society. I concede it may be true that today's methods of raising a child are not perfect for the children. However, the destiny of our society will not necessarily been detrimentally affected by this training, for the socialization of children is not the only determinant of our society's destiny and what is more, the training system can adjusts itself to the development of our society from the perspective of evolution.

First of all, the socialization for children means providing the resources necessary to adjust them better to their future lives in society. Among the methods utilized by us to socialize our children, most are through education. It is what have been learnt from classes that help the children know how to resist various kinds of evil temptations, how to persist in chasing their dreams and how to cooperate with each other. Overall, it is the knowledge gained from classes that prepare our children better for their future.

To some extent, however, it is not the socialization of our children that determines our society's future. The choices from some elites of our society, to some certain degree, are more likely to indicate the direction where our world moves towards. For example, if George Washington hasn't decided to participate in the War of Independence and create a free country, if Abraham Lincoln hasn't chose to save hundreds of thousands of slaves from their untold suffering, or if Roosevelt hasn't signed the order of Manhattan Project which helped end the World War Two, our society would likely to run on the opposite way and promise us nothing about today's prosperity. Compared with the contributions from these elites of our society, the children of the society is only walking along the roads paved by other people while do not play the roles of carving out the way.

Granted that the first statement of the topic is true, the speaker's assertion is still troubling in some other respect.

On one side, it may be true that the education systems of our society have not been improved perfectly. A bird-eye view of our society, more and more parents are sending their children to study for some skills like playing piano, dancing or calligraphy so as to prepare them better for the challenging society. They fail to concern, however, some inner qualities of the children such as a strong physique, a benevolent heart and the courage towards the unavoidable drawbacks in the future.

Nevertheless, the speaker ignores the other, may be more important side of the education system of our society, which is the progress of it from the perspective of evolution. The "evolution theory" states that the each kind of species will adjust itself to the variation of the outer circumstance. The same is true for our education system. Maybe it is not a perfect system for the development of the children, but it is the most appropriate one which helps our society move forward. Because unless our society is moving backward, the education system exists nowadays is progressive since it will die out otherwise for maladjustment. While ranging from technology, economy to morality, our society is moving forward as we have always expected. Moreover, some existing evidence will strengthen my view. Examples are that the contemporary teaching methods are training the children to have greater tolerance towards skepticism, learn to cooperate across national and cultural boundaries, to respect human rights, etc, which helps the children to create a better society in the future. Therefore, the education system existing today is an appropriate way for the socialization of our children.

In sum, the speaker's assertion is true when concerning the perfection of our training system. However, it fails to account for the possibilities that the system is appropriate from the perspective of evolution and what is more, the socialization of children may not be the only factor which determines the destiny of our society.
