ARGUMENT211 - The following appeared in a memorandum to faculty from the academic vice president of Waymarsh University.

"So that we can better accomplish Waymarsh University's academic goals, we should adopt the job-opportunity (job-op) program offered at Plateau Technical College and strongly encourage all students at Waymarsh to participate in it. The success of the job-op program at Plateau is evident: over the past two years, more than 75% of the freshmen at Plateau have enrolled in the optional job-op program. Moreover, at Plateau, the grades of job-op students are consistently higher than those of other students, 90% of the job-op students receive job offers within a month after their graduation, and most former job-op students report much success in their careers."

In the memo, the author concludes that Waymarsh University(WU) should adopt job-opportunity(job-op) program offered at Plateau Technical College(PTC) and encourage all students to participate in it. To substantiate the argument, the author cites a series of evidence to prove that job-op program is successful. Close scrutiny of the evidence reveals that it did little credible support to the argument, and therefore is unconvincing as it stands.

Firstly, the evidence showed by the arguer cannot be used to demonstrate that job-op program is successful in PTC. For one thing, that more than 75% of the freshmen at PTC have enrolled in the program does not necessarily indicate that job-op program is popular in PTC. It is known to all that freshmen are usually not familiar with the contents of course in the university for the first year, and thus it might be the case that so many freshmen chose job-op program just for its attractive name. Again, it is likely that job-op boasts a high passing rate and freshmen find it easy to get credit in the course. For another thing, it is mentioned in the argument that the grades of job-op students are higher than those of other students does not make any sense. The author does not account for that those students who participate in Job-op program are outstanding in school all the time and work hard at ordinary times. Therefore, it is natural that they can obtain higher grades than others. Finally, that 90% of job-op students receive job offers within a month after their graduation is not sufficient enough to illustrate that those job-op students are more advantaged in seeking jobs. The author does not give any information about job offers of those who do not take job-op programs. It might be the case that those people get jobs more quickly than job-op students due to some other courses which job-op students do not participate in. Hence, the evidence showed suffers several logic flaws, rendering the argument unconvincing.
Even assuming that job-program achieve the brilliant accomplishments in PTC, the author cannot assure us that WU will obtain the same goals by following PTC's example. The author does not consider the difference between two schools that might make the program ineffective in WU. For example, it is mentioned in the article that WU is a comprehensive university and PTC is a technical college. There are chances that WU lays greater emphasis on theoretical education while PTC pays more attention on technical practice. Common sense tells us that students expert at theoretical knowledge will not necessarily be skilled at real practice. Consequently, the introduction of Job-op program will not enhance the opportunity for students in WU but dear a blow to their confidence on practical capability.
Last but not least, even if I concede that WU will also benefit from the job-op program, it is still too hasty for author to conclude that WU should encourage all the students to participate in the program. On one hand, the author cannot guarantee that there will be enough teachers to conduct the course of job-op program for all the students in WU. There is possibility that limited teaching sources will prevent some portion of students from taking the course. On the other hand, we are not informed of the job wanted intention of most students in WU. It might be the case that most students in WU will require further education, which job-op program will not take effects to at all. If both scenarios would be true, it is too early for the author to popularize the program to the whole school.
To sum up, the argument is not well supported. To strengthen the article, the author should provide clearer evidence that job-op program will be beneficial to WU as well as PTC. To better assess the argument, the author also needs to show us that the program will meet the needs of students in WU and school has the ability to hold it.
