TOPIC: ARGUMENT45 - The following appeared as an editorial in a wildlife journal.

"Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic region. They search for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of a year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed, and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the decline in arctic deer populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea."

In the editorial of a wildlife journal, the author aims to convince us that the declining population of arctic deer in Canada's arctic region due to the result of recent global warming trends so that it can not follow the age-old migration patterns. To support his/her assumption, the author cited the report of local hunters which illustrates that the number of deer is becoming smaller. The conclusion seems advisable, however, several critical flews undermine the line of reasoning.

To begin with, the report of local hunters is too vague and lends scant evidence to support author's assumption that the population of Arctic deer is rapidly declining. Commonly speaking, the hunters' judgments possibly base on their experiences and observation of a certain region. Firstly, observation is unreliable to some extent, the number of deer the hunter witness dose not equates the real population, probably, he happens not to see them. Secondly, the region that a hunter can observe is restricted, they can hardly travel to every place the arctic deer habitat. Unless these possibilities are well rebutted, the author should not extrapolate the conclusion that the population of arctic deer is really decreasing.

Furthermore, the author fails to establish a causal relationship between the recent global warming trends and the decreasing population of arctic deer. As the author cited, it is a global trend instead of a local trend, which may not certainly cause the rising temperature in Canada's arctic region. In the passage, few supporting evidence can be found to demonstrate the reason why the global trends can be applied in this region. Even I concede the temperature of the arctic region in Canada is actually higher than average, I do not succeed in reaching the assumption the author raised so comfortably. Many other reasons that may cause the decreasing population of arctic deer aside from the rising temperature which may be a excessive hunting last year or the result of natural selection. It may be a truth that a changing in climate can result in a change in habiting for most of animals including the arctic deer, however, can the change in climate in the Canadian region so tremendous that many deer have died from it? Mere evidence can explain the question. Under no circumstance should I agree that the warming trends can responsible for the population decline unless related convincing reasons are presented.

In sum, the conclusion rests on certain unreliable assumptions that render it unconvincing as it stands. To rectify these flews, the author should bring supporting evidence concentrating on real number of arctic deer and whether the reduction of the population mainly caused by the local changing climate.

(Good , begining!!!!!)
