11"All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
As the society develops, the problems facing all humanity become more and more significant. It is urgent to find a way to cultivate our children where the global problems will be solved. Building such a university is a good idea, however, as far as I know, it is not realistic.
Serious problems occur along with the society’s development. During the recent 100 years, we have witnessed the global warming, water and air pollution and unclear weapon’s explosion. It seems that we must take action immediately or our future life will be at hazard.
The author’s idea of building a global university provides us with a good method. Such a university will overcome the shortcomings of current universities. Firstly, one of the shortcomings of current universities is that they will inevitablely affected by the cultural of their own country. In this way, the student of them will gradually adjust their standard that their own countries problems are important while global problems are trivial. A university in American, for example, will concern less about the world hunger than its own unemployment. A global university, because it is established with the support of many countries, will overcome this shortcoming. Secondly, A global university will make it easier for researchers to collaborate with each other and thus promote their abilities to solve global problems. Many problems such as water and air pollution and world hunger are not just about one country. Some of Mexican’s air pollution might be discharged from Florida. A aggravating African hunger may has some thing to do with American’s Financial crisis. Thus, uniting researchers of different national background will definitely increase working efficency. For example, in the study of world hunger, scientist from African’s opinion may be more correspond with reality than that of other countries. Due to the two reasons, building a global university will help solve global problems in a better way that it is today.
However, as far as I see it, building such a university is not realistic. There are so many questions to be solved in establishing the university. For example, how to choose its location? It seems that there is nowhere to place such a university because no matter where you put it, it will be unfair to some other countries. For example, if it were located at China, people in the western countries would not be satisfied. Another problem concerns the fund to build such a university. Should America pay more? If so, should this university cares America more? There are so many problems lies ahead. Since it is built with the support of many countries, which country should be the manager? Should this university admit more student from the country that donate more? How to solve the problems of their graduates’ employment?
To sum up, building such a university is a good idea, but not realistic.
